That was a quick turn from the reports he wanted to go back to Barcelona.
I gotta imagine Barcelona’s financials weren’t in good enough shape to sign him.

The big factor seems to the reports about Apple offering profit sharing and Adidas kicking in money as well.

DeSantis and Florida Republicans immediately concerned at the amount of males walking around Florida in pink shirts…

He gets a cut of new subscribers to the MLS Streaming package...

Basically MLS is betting on another European Superstar in the twilight of their career...

It’s not a bad move. Even 10 million subscribers worldwide is over $600 million gross for Apple.

MLS gets more money, Messi gets more money, and Apple gets an opportunity to increase their market share worldwide.

Srsly? Not even the number above whatever the current rise rate is? I assume MLS has been growing like a weed.
It’s being reported that way. Adidas is also kicking in a percentage of sales as well.

It’s a good deal for both companies. Adidas gets to use their already biggest athlete to gain market share in the lucrative US soccer market and make headway into the general US apparel market. Apple is essentially giving away a drop in the bucket of their revenue for potentially increasing their worldwide market share on iPhone and iPad sales plus potentially more subscribers to AppleTV+.

It should be noted that the league’s contract with Apple has the league getting an increasing percentage of revenue at various subscriber levels. And, per the CBA, a portion of that revenue goes into the salary cap.

One thing I'm kind of annoyed with:

If MLS is gonna shell out $TEXAS for a player, throw it at someone like Erling Haaland, and have them play here IN THEIR PRIME. Not Messi who is approaching Joe Namath with the Rams territory in a couple seasons...

Will the people who come to MLS stick around once he's gone? The 1+ Million followers that bailed on PSG's social media accounts after he announced he was leaving suggest that many will not.

I don't see prime age players of that level coming over for any amount... yet.

European football is still the top place to be.

He’s only 35 and won the Golden Ball and Silver Boot at the World Cup six months ago. He’s coming off a season of 16 goals and 16 assists. He’s not in peak form but he’s not trash either.

Of course not everyone is going to stick around, but everyone knows that. And even if only 10% stay that’s still a lot of people they didn’t have before. And considering part of the deal includes an ownership stake, he’s not leaving completely any time soon.

Look at what happened with Beckham. Yeah, not everyone stuck around but the league was in a completely different situation when he retired. That, and he never really left as he’s still an owner of Miami. Reportedly, one the reasons Messi chose Miami was because of Beckham.

On one hand, it’s nice to see the increased media attention because of Messi.

On the other hand, it’s terrible to listen to the increased media attention because of Messi.

Here's the real problem with Messi.
Inter Miami @ Orlando , Sep 24th
cheapest ticket: $519.

There is no seat at any regular season game that isn't a suite that should cost that much. Ever.

And it's all the secondary market, so Inter Miami sees ZERO extra revenue for it. They were selling seats for $30-60 hours before this went public. Then speculators picked up the tickets.

The conservative soccer-seat heavy portfolio wins again!

Welcome to Ticket Buying in 2023... Profit over fans wanting to actually do something....

I would have like 85% less anger if it was the team that was making money off this ( It is THEIR product that is in demand after all). I've just had it with brokers and secondary markets/middle men when it comes to tickets.

I remember a time when many states (like NY) had laws against scalping a ticket for over 10% of the retail value. Now, StubHub tacks on a ~25% fee just to buy a ticket...
