That's a terrible fucking call. I'm sorry.

touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised

How is that not in a natural position for the body movement given the situation? Terrible.

I've turned off the commentary, not that I'd understand it anyway, but I assume the yellow card assessed to Ruben Dias was for dissent, and VAR just proved him right, so the referee will take back the yellow, right? ;-):):)

Portugal convert. 2-0.

LMAO

No. Correct, incorrect is immaterial. Mouth off, you're going to start seeing cards.

Woof, that is a bad call on that. I’m shocked the referee didn’t veto that VAR intervention.

I'm not even sure it denied an opportunity for Portugal either. I thought portugal were offsides there. I can't find a replay but I remember watching live thinking it was very close.

There’s an argument to be made that the defender is deliberately putting his hand/arm in that position to block the ball but there’s no way that’s “clear and obvious”. It shouldn’t have even been sent down let alone accepted.

Death, taxes, Christiano scoring at the World Cup...

After review, Ronaldo never even touched it and the goal was credited to Bruno Fernandes. Give the man an Oscar for that acting job.

Also, as has been pointed out elsewhere, if defenders realize they can get away with dragging their hands like that, then every time an opponent enters the box in that position they will slide and use their hand as "support" and if the ball happens to hit it, oh well...

Cool. Then address that in the off-season. Can't dynamically change that rule now. If Uruguay went home on GD, that would be a travesty.

Good recap of the insanity that was the USMNT’s press conference.

“Why is it that you do not ask your government to take away its military fleet from the Persian Gulf?”

“It seems the U.S. media have also started the mind games and attack like England and U.K. [media], we have never seen in sports that something like this has happened.”

“I’ve been in New York about two months ago, and there was no support to your team [due to] the high rise of inflation and economic problems. Do you think the American people support your team and you?”

“How is your reaction when I tell you U.S. passport [holders], they can be welcome to Iran anytime, and they can visit anywhere in Iran. But the same time Iranian passport, they can’t enter USA or United States lands, otherwise they have to make some problems?”

If the two Group A games finish with the same score and the same result for Netherlands and Ecuador, seeding and/or who advances between those two will come down to who is the “cleaner team” as the tiebreaker right now is fair play points, with Netherlands having the advantage by two points.

US needs to score early today to reduce the pressure on them. They have terrible finishing up front. Need a break to go their way. I'm sure Iran is playing for a draw.

Only US goal has been on a counter attack. I fully expect the US to have to do that to win today as Iran will park the bus...so I'm not confident they will get the opportunity...and I don't think the US can break down their D like England did.
