With the rash of boring MLS Playoff games due to the two leg format plus away goals Grant Wahl has the solution: Group Stage!

Ugh, Wahl has beating this drum for years and it’s still not a good idea. Even his World Cup analogy is bogus as there are plenty of boring group stage games at the World Cup. And the amount of dead rubbers on that last day would be excruciating, nothing says playoff excitement like Toronto’s backups versus an already eliminated, not giving AF Columbus!

I think its a great idea. There are bad games all around in any format, but this one seems better to me.

I also like how it creates value to finishing higher with more home games.

Single Elimination all day. Get it over with quick, no need to drag it out.

I'm fine with single elimination. As for not having playoffs being the quickest (which I realize was a bit tongue in cheek)...this is America, we have playoffs and we shouldn't have to apologize for it.

That's silly. It's like saying we should have best-of-7 in football. I mean, THIS IS AMERICA!

Different sports have different appropriate formats. Soccer works best by just naming the RS leader as the champion, and then having Cup tournies to milk the suckers for some extra dough.

No it doesn't. That's just how most of the world does it. MLS doesn't play a balanced schedule so a single table doesn't make sense.

We should stop calling the regular season the regular season. Because it's really just an extended qualification season at this point since all we care about are the playoffs.

And as MLS grows it becomes even more impossible to play a balanced schedule.

I think once Beckham’s Miami comes in MLS is heading for division play, and hopefully including the Pacific “Norris” Division.

People will do anything to get out of playing the Timbers.

I like the home-and-away format even if the first game isn't always the greatest. This year did include 2 goalless first leg games, but there were none last year and only 1 in 2015.

Lol Vancouver. How did they finish 3rd in the West?

Oh right, the other 7 teams suck worse.
