Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

From the pxp from the Telegraph

9:53pm
WOW
Wow. Wowowowooww. Wow. Wowowoowwowoww. I cannot believe it. That was beyond embarrassing. There are people who wake up without their shoes, with a text from their boss saying they've been fired and an empty memory from the night before who have had a more successful evening.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

We all know England never actually performs to standard, so no surprise they were ousted by Iceland.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

I think they were properly rated here at least. Not a tourney favorite but expected to reach quarters. I mean there's no reason they shouldn't beat iceland.

Exactly. Most overrated country EVERY major tournament for last 50 years.
They didn't have a bad run from 1986 to around 2002. Aside from missing the 1994 World Cup (which may down to crap manager), they went to the Quarterfinals in 1986, 1998, and 2002 and made the Semis in 1990 plus qualified for the Euros in 88 and 92 (when it was only 8 teams) and the Semis in 96 at home. A lot of countries would like that run.

But yeah nowadays they're pretty overrated.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

I'm a bit surprised by the "worst loss in history/biggest upset ever in soccer" narrative ESPN has been running.

Sure, it's the inventors of the game against the Indoor Kids, island nation the size of Leicester versus all of England, but Iceland has finished 2nd in their last three group stages (2014 WCQ, Euro Qual, Euro) and were in the WC playoff against Croatia. They've come from humble beginnings, but they're pretty dang good. It's not like Denmark in '92 who didn't even qualify, or 1950 USA-England where the kings of the sport finally decided to enter the WC and were upended by part-time players.

Everyone's acting like Tahiti rolled into the Confed Cup and took down Spain.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

C'mon, this is the equivalent of the Jamaican bobsled team winning an Olympic medal. With all the old guard out there it just shouldn't happen.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

I listened to British football talk radio after the game and it was hilarious. Guys who were drunk off their gourd (or sounded it) were calling radio and cursing out the players, coaches and English football in general. The host broke in with news that Hodgson had quit and was on the line with some fan from Chelsea and came back and asked him, "Where should the FA go from here?" Like the drunk bloke from Chelsea has any idea! There were like 5 seconds of dead air, which on radio is an eternity.

Normally I cheer for the Brits, but between Brexit and the underdog story of Iceland, I had to switch allegiances. I imagine everyone outside of France will be supporting Iceland when they play Sunday.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

England has some very dangerous attacking talent but no midfield leader that i can see. It's not wayne rooney. That and joe hart can let in some brutal goals.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

Just my opinion but the English are way better in their own mind than they actually are. They think because they have good teams in the EPL that makes them good, forgetting that half the players are from somewhere else. The rankings I really don't pay much attention to except as a general view.

Now here's a question for you. Does Bradley, or Altidore, or Guzan make the MNT for the 2018 WC?
