Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

Who really wants to go to Russia anyway?
It will be interesting to see how the fallout goes from this. Torches and pitchforks are out everywhere but it's clear Gulati won't get rid of Jurgen. However, Jurgen has done nothing but PO everyone involved at MLS who have some measure of power at USSF.

No Olympics, No Confederations Cup, and a high profile loss to Mexico and the USSF looks really bad right now.

MLS should really get over themselves.... otherwise... yes... lack of progression given the supposed talent we have is starting to become alarming.

It's mostly because Jurgen refuses to play that talent because the players play in MLS.

And there's a friendly Tuesday against Costa Rica.

Didn't Jurgen put himself in charge of player development?

I'm not a rah rah MLS guy, in fact I can't stand watching MLS, but isn't he doing the opposite of what he needs to do for development if we're getting later and later into his regime and all he's done is pick more and more guys who either never played in the US or never even lived here?

Yes, he's also Technical Director. He's been in charge of hiring the coaches of the Youth National Teams as part of that. He's record there has been spotty as well: missing the 2012 Olympics (yay Caleb Porter! ) and looking to miss 2016 (a stated major goal for this year). A DNQ in 2013 for the U17 team (the only time the US has ever missed the tournament). The U20 team has done ok but based largely on MLS products.

The Jordan Morris situation is the most interesting. It's long believed in the Seattle Sounders camp (who hold his MLS rights) that Jurgen is encouraging him to stay at Stanford and calling him up to boost his profile to European teams instead of signing with Seattle. Which is incredibly ironic given Jurgen's statements on players needing to be at "competitive" situations. So instead of actually competing with two of the best forwards in MLS (and two international veterans) for playing time, he's being encouraged to stay in the NCAA (which brutal for player development) so he can be shunted off to some Euro youth or reserve team!

Stuff going around on Twitter that Klinsmann has sent Fabian Johnson back home after they had a "major philosophical disagreement."

Apparently Johnson asked to bet taken out saturday night? F Klinsmann, I'm done with him...

So johnson took himself out without a real injury?

It's possible he is and Klinsmann is spinning it. But, even then, he played 111 minutes two weeks back from injury, in 90+ degree temps. It's understandable he was completely gassed and needed a sub. Klinsmann is PO'd because Johnson ruined his plan to sub Guzan for Nick Rimando for PKs. Yes people, Jurgen Klinsmann held a sub despite having numerous players gassed in high heat, basically defending for 100+ minutes, to sub his goalkeeper.

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

Took a look at Euro Qualifier groups now that that stage is over.

Wales and Northern Ireland qualify directly, and Scotland is eliminated? I get that they had a tough group, but cue that Trainspotting clip...

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

And now his club has stated he's receiving treatment for a thigh injury...

Interesting. Going deeper than Klinsmann, how long has Gulati been in charge? Anyway, right now it doesn't look like Klinsmann is going to be able to turn this thing around to the level people want. Not sure what it would take to fire him.

Sure seems like he's lost the players? Time to move on...

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

MLS Playoffs start on Wednesday. Top 6 in each conference, 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5 in one game playoffs.

Out East
1. Red Bulls (also won the Supporters Shield)
2. Columbus
3. Montreal
4. DC
5. New England
6. Toronto

Toronto made the playoffs! And there will playoff soccer in Canada!

Out West:
1. Dallas
2. Vancouver
3. Portland
4. Seattle
5. LA
6. KC

League has to be really happy getting that Seattle-LA match on a Wednesday on UniMas...

And Montreal, DC, Seattle, LA, and SKC all finished on 51 points (and Columbus, Vancouver, and Portland had 53).
