Luck aside, we were better team. I've always thought red cards are given out way too easily so i was happy johnston wasn't shown the door.

And hard to fault a ref for giving the US a pk as watching it live i can totally understand thinking the foul was in the area.

May be harsh but, a FIFA Referee should be in a good enough position to determine that play was outside the penalty area.

I'm not much of a soccer fan but the kid and I were yelling at tv last night. I would never watch a MLS game but women's world cup is fun with US playing great.

This is a silly line of reasoning. The first goal in soccer is huge - it completely changes everything about the game from that point forward.

So if the German penalty hit the target, we wouldn't have scored two goals. Right.

All I'm saying is that if it was 1-0 and Germany wanted to file a protest, they'd have a beef. US scored two, so the argument has been dissipated.

I always wonder why players never shoot straight on penalties. Is it too easy for the goalie to tell? Seems like the goalie picks a side before the kick is even gone and going straight forward you would have zero chance of missing wide.

Sometimes the goalie does play the middle. Just like poker, there are definitely tells that the kicker gives away, which is why the goalie will anticipate that particular area. Such tells include from which direction you approach the spot, and the movement of the foot can give the difference between a hook and a slice.

The ideal situation for the kicker is to pick a corner (usually an upper corner as it's less likely the keeper will get to it; remember the rules state that the keeper must be touching any part of the goal line until the ball has left the spot, and the kicker may not touch the now live ball again until it has touched another player so they can't play a rebound off the crossbar), put your boot behind it as much as possible, and get it in.

You ought to see these women play in the NWSL; they're quite amazing out there. All the games are free to watch on Youtube.

I think I got it mixed up with WPS, which upon further review has been gone for a few years now.

Totally saw that coming.

(Not really.)

With a team losing an important game in an excruciating fashion, this really should have been played in Vancouver.
