Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

You guys need to look at it from the Canadian angle:

A boy, he'll find new and interesting ways to not qualify for the World Cup.

A girl, she'll find new and interesting ways to lose to the US in the knockout rounds...
The Canadian angle is actually: that kind of athletic genes would make one heck of a two-sport star in hockey and lacrosse.

True.

Or, if he sticks with soccer, he'll remember at 15 he has English citizenship and be off to spend the next 15 years wondering if he'll make England's bench.

Never understood players wanting to do that when they could the star of USA or Canada. (See Rossi, Giuseppe and Hargreaves, Owen.)

The Russian Economy tanking has consequences
@SlavaMalamud: Meanwhile, RUS's soccer league (which, by FIFA laws, must pay its foreigners in Euros and USD) is facing mass fire sales by ALL teams.

Possibly. In hindsight, he missed 3 World Cups picking Italy.

That is still narrowminded. He chose Italy because he grew up idolizing the italian team. If he had been a little younger (say 5 years) during the 2002 run, he likely chooses USA because he sees a path to success and has american players to idolize. In the end, he may have been a lost cause no matter what with his italian upbringing.

Still doesn't mean I don't experience schadenfruede when thinking about his situation. Similar to how I feel about my neighbor who still roots for Mexico first even though he's lived here most of his life. I may understand it, but I'm still going to give them crap for it.

Gedion Zelalem tweeted an american flag so we all must patiently wait to see if that means he's now a US Citizen.
