World Soccer XXIX: Pro/Rel USA! just kidding!

Maybe. FWIW, I don't believe Sweden was too concerned with their matchup with the USA, and was more focused on the knockout stages. They were a much better team against Germany and the Netherlands than they were against the USA. As you mentioned, France and Spain both challenged the USA. I thought England challenged us too, particularly in the second half. As for the Dutch, they were certainly playing a different strategy, and had they been successful on a counter early on, it would have been a much different game.
To me, there never really seemed to be a “they’re really going to lose” moment like in other tournaments. The teams would look good coming in but when the moment came the Euro teams bonked.

One of the main problems, to me at least, is the Euro teams are kind of in an uncanny valley where they’ve advanced so much tactically and technically that can appear to be able to beat the US tactically but then the athleticism takes over for the US and it’s not really close.

Re: World Soccer XXIX: Pro/Rel USA! just kidding!

Do they have to murder Alex Morgan before the official calls a foul?

Edit: up on further review by VAR - Penalty

She really sold that, though. It was definitely a foul but Morgan knew exactly what she was doing; worthy of the Azzurri. All part of the game.

That's a fair assessment. Of course, it leads me to wonder if boys/young men in the United States were driven towards soccer in the same manner as girls/young women are, would the US Men have better success at the International level? In other words, your theory appears to be that there is an athleticism gap between the United States and the rest of the World (particularly Europe), which has allowed the USA to dominate in the biggest stages. Is this a random phenomenon that will likely only exist for a short period of time? Or, is it due to the fact that girls/young women in the US largely have only a few sports to choose from (largely soccer and basketball, and to some extent, hockey), and given the country's size and promotion of women's sport in relation to the rest of the world, the USA has a plethora of talented and athletic women's soccer players in relation to the rest of the world that will allow the country to continue to dominate for the foreseeable future? If the former, then my initial question is probably moot. However, if it is the latter, it would lead me to believe that in order for the United States to be ultimately successful on the international stage, it would require either a significant advancement in the tactic/technical side of the game, or a push to convince the most athletically gifted boys/young men to go the soccer route.

This is exactly how I felt the last 3 games without being able to express it. Thank you.

Typically I loathe American superteams and root for them to fall on their face; in fact I've done that with prior USWNT in soccer. But this one I was rooting my balls off for. It predated the completely predictable misogynistic politics of the Dumpies. This team was just worthy in a way prior teams were not. Maybe because women's soccer is finally real and not just a made-for-TV stooge show.

The future of women's soccer is so much more interesting than the men.

It's 1947 and the USMNT is poised just before the breaking of the color line. It's not strictly color, this time, except for rightwing dou-ches. It's class.

Here's my proposal: take the best 11 from our border prison camps and put them against the USMNT. The prisoners will win 10-nil. We already have the Americans who can dominate in soccer -- we're just using them as slaves.

When we finally break through that insane nativist barrier we'll deserve to compete. Until then we're just another self-defeating apartheid state.

When we finally break through that insane nativist barrier we'll deserve to compete. Until then we're just another self-defeating apartheid state.

If Latin America dominated world soccer, I might be inclined to agree with you. But this take is pretty far off base.

In a word: no.

Latin American soccer is a mess. Actually, American (the continents) soccer is a mess as a whole.

Brazil is still shocked from 2014.
Argentina is basically Messi and 10 dudes on his back.
Chile has fallen off a cliff.
The US is a young team trying to figure things out.
Mexico is just wandering around lost.
Costa Rica and Honduras can’t score.

As for the US, there’s plenty of young talent coming out of the MLS academies. It’s just a matter of a) them getting playing time and b) hoping they pan out.

The point is it's not race. It's hunger. Give me a white immigrant fighting for his kid's life against a well-scrubbed prep school POC as-swipe.

I don't understand how you guys can keep missing the point. Maybe this is just an extension of how you miss the point politically. It's fat, stupid, connected people punching deserving people in the face. The race of those respective faces is completely irrelevant. It's just money.

Trying to throw politics into this particular discussion shows you have no idea what you are talking about. Similarly, you have no idea how I stand politically.

I don't care how you stand politically. You aren't important and your political views certainly aren't.

The point here isn't political, it's economic. US mens soccer is still controlled by the Philly main line and those east cost prep schools you midwestern hayseeds love to hate on. You should actually be on my side in this. Y'know, death to the coasties, @ etc.

This isn't about your predictable parochial malfunction. This is something real.

Of these nations, how many are or were “hungry”?

Uruguay
Italy
Germany
Brazil
Argentina
France
England
Spain

So now I'm a midwestern hayseed? :p:D:D

I get that you're on your soapbox and you don't want to get down, but you've turned into the delusional homeless man ranting on the corner downtown...but maybe we should just give you a kit and some shin guards and we'd start winning World Cups.

I'm a bit disappointed Kepler...particularly from a fellow Isles fan. ;)

From you I would expect some care for PTSD.

The point here is you and I don't matter at all. US men's soccer is still being run for Buffy and Muffy, like tennis circa 1930. I'd much rather MS-13 go up against Mexico next time. They aren't on the NYSE but they know how to close.

Didn't Hope Solo say something about US Soccer being a country club mentality?

The Men and the Women had similar systems until about 2008 when the academy system started getting ramped up at MLS clubs. The difference is on the Men’s side other countries have had a hundred plus years of professional development and almost no competition from other sports.

On the Women’s side the US has had the worlds premier development system: College soccer and the youth system designed to promote girls to it. Hundreds of universities with world class training facilities and perfectly cromulent coaching churning out athletically gifted (though not really technically or tactically gifted) players. If you want to know who’s responsible for the US winning four Women’s World Cups, thank college football and Title IX.

The other countries are starting to invest but the US has had a 40 year head start.

So, the US Women are 40 years ahead of the rest of the world, and the US Men are 100 years behind? That doesn't sound promising for a Men's World Cup in my lifetime. I guess we will just have to enjoy our dominance on the women's side. :)

Currently, the United States has won more FIFA World Cups than any other country except three: Germany (6), Brazil (5), Italy (tied with the US with 4).

Uh no. If anything soccer in this country is controlled by California and Texas with maybe New Jersey involved.

Also, I learned today that Zack Steffen, Sean Johnson, Nick Lima, Omar Gonzalez, Reggie Cannon, Weston McKennie, Cristian Roldan, Gyasi Zardes, Jozy Altidore, and Jonathan Lewis are all from rich white families!

Re: World Soccer XXIX: Pro/Rel USA! just kidding!

Alpine : snowboarding :: men's soccer: women's soccer

Rich country does sh-tty in important sport. Rich country invents way to medal in something kinda like sport. Rich country medals in sport, networks love it, derps love it.

Eventually, world catches up. Rich country has a sad.

Instead of rambling just accept you were wrong. It’d save Ralph the worry of us catching up in post count.
