World Soccer XXIX: Pro/Rel USA! just kidding!

BTW, here is an oddball soccer rule. A goalie can score by throwing the ball into the net. Now mind you, since he can only touch the ball within his penalty box, he'll have to throw that ball 100 or so yards. And the opposing goalie would have to be catatonic to not be able to stop it. But if a goalie somehow manages to pull that off, it's a goal.
Not true anymore. No player may score a goal using any part of their hand or arm even unintentionally. A GK thrown ball into the goal results in a goal kick.

From Law 10:
If the goalkeeper throws the ball directly into the opponents’ goal, a goal kick is awarded.

Okay, so they changed the rule since I was a certified ref, which is a long time ago.

A shame in some ways. I always loved those bizarre rules that every sport has. Not only are they good for winning a beer bet in a bar, but they are just fun to think about actually happening. Not to mention, in some cases like this one, it is so improbable, that my feeling is if it does happen, they should allow it!

So that seems like soccers version of a "Fair Catch ---> Free Kick FG attempt" in American Football... It's there but gets attempted like once every 10-15 years :p. It does become a fun game of "What If...."

So, basically the same as a throw-in, the other time that players are allowed to put the ball into play using their hands. Makes sense, I guess.

England vs America.

Happy Independence Day!

The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.

I love that rule, too. And another great bar bet...

A couple of years ago, the ESPN hockey writer wrote an article about these types of rules in hockey.

If you could dig that up I'd appreciate it. Even it was only ESPN. ;)

Sounds like you guys would’ve enjoyed the old State Referee test. That thing was a 100 bar bet questions.

Happy 30th birthday to Alex Morgan.

A hat trick makes a lovely gift.

That's wonderful.

Of all places Deadspin actually captured her with the perfect headline.

Dump, Fox, and Republicans are such adolescent haters. The trolls in my office are rooting for the USA "except for that woman." I said "every member of the team supports that woman, so you might as well hate all of them." Go USA! Go Megan! F-ck the haters; they don't matter, their time is over. We are leaving the slow kids to stew in their own filth and violence.
