Someone on Reddit used FIFA's ranking calculator and came up with the following:
Brazil is in as host while Spain, Germany, Argentina, Colombia, Belgium, and Switzerland all get Top 7 spots.

Uruguay is currently in 6th but needs to beat Jordan to qualify.

If, by some miracle that doesn't happen, Italy and the Netherlands each have 1136 points for 8th and apparently the Dutch are 0.3 points ahead of Italy.

This implies that assuming Uruguay wins their playoff, the Top 8 is a 4/4 UEFA/CONMEBOL.

The remaining teams by confederation:
UEFA - 9
CONCACAF - 3.5
AFC - 4
CAF - 5
OFC - 0.5
CONMEBOL - 2

I'd guess that CONCACAF gets in a pot of 8, teaming with either AFC or CAF depending on Mexico's result with New Zealand.

And, of course, there can't be 3 UEFA teams in any single group, so everyone hoping for Spain, France, England, and somebody will be disappointed. But, Brazil, Portugal, Netherlands, and US isn't out of the picture. Would that be the Group of Death? That feels like the GoD.

****, I grabbed the wrong number on Netherlands...the reddit person is correct, Swiss have 1138, while Netherlands and Italy have 1136 after yesterday's matches.
As for the group of death, Brazil, Netherlands, Portugal is impossible if they break off the last placed UEFA country into a special pot like they did with Serbia & Montenegro in 2006. Neither Portugal nor Netherlands can be the last placed UEFA team. Although I suppose that depends on what rankings they use to determine that...if it all falls on the October 2013 rankings or not?

You're right. I thought for a second that they would just draw two UEFA teams consecutively, instead of putting the 9th ranked team in their own pot, which makes a lot more sense.

I think it would have to be Brady, not the Mannings, in your nightmare scenario, but otherwise that's pretty much what I'm expecting.

Yup, that makes sense...because we'd rather lose a match because we want to hurt our arch rival than actually win a match and show that on the road we can win with subs. Graham Zusi is just doing his job, trying to prove he deserves to go to Brazil. I'm sure Jurgen Klinsmann wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Never giving up, even in a meaningless game to us is far more important to me than Mexico not qualifying. They still have to show up against New Zealand and even if they do, we can hang this one over their heads for a very long time.

I was loving the 2-1 Panama lead as much as anyone but I can't fault the US for fighting back and playing to the end. I would have loved to see Panama continue it's quest for it's first World Cup appearance but oh well. I can't hate Zusi, especially not after breaking the scoreless tie in Kansas City that made all that driving last friday worth it.
