Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Oh, were the Welsh, Scots, and Northern Irish complaining?

I know Wales has a few teams, and Celtic/Rangers fans are always pretending that they can be in the E(B)PL, but the thought of Northern Ireland there... hmmm...

No, it just wasn't accurate. Some people on Twitter thought similarly that "BPL" was "Barclay's Premier League" and wondered why FSC was selling out to sponsors. That is the explanation FSC gave on Twitter.

How many countries are in this country?

Don't save the Wales...EPL is what I call it.

It's actually the British Premier League. FSC corrected it last year when Swansea City entered the league. It isn't just English clubs that compete.
Wrong. Scotland, Wales, and N. Ireland all are separate countries. They say BPL because of the sponsor.

They said it wasn't and explained why. If you don't like the explanation, take it up with them.

I think its silly...It's the English Premier League. Some Welsh clubs choose to play under the FA intstead of the FAW, doesn't mean its not the English Premier League...
We didn't change the name of the American League because it has a Canadian Team...its still the American League even though not all the teams in it are in the USA. I don't see anyone arbitrarily calling it the North American League, do you?

Technically, the official name is "The FA Premier League" and for sponsorship reasons the "Barclays Premier League" thus the "BPL". There is no "British Premier League" just because two teams from Wales who compete in the English League system happen to be in it.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Just curious, any national team supporters out there who might be willing to send me their presale code for the USA-Jamaica game in KC? I'm planning to head down there but would like to make sure I get tickets. Just saw the presales start this week.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Fox Sports One has Champions League pre-game show at 2PM ET. They promise some kind of "exclusive, first-of-its kind soccer announcement!"

ETA: Grant Wahl just plugged it too. Going to involve Sports Illustrated.

Since when is Canada not in America? Just because we often shorten "United States of America" to "America" doesn't mean the actual definition of America has changed.

Britain is a bit of a different beast, since that's a political rather than geographical boundary. I can definitely see why the league would want to bill itself as the "British" league - people in Scotland, Wales, and N. Ireland are generally pretty happy to be British, but call them "English?" Them's fightin' words!

The same can be said of calling a Canadian an American.

Geography notwithstanding, the term "American" in the English language predominantly means "of or from the USA." And yes, I've read the whole Wikipedia page arguing otherwise, but usage is usage.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

To most people, when you refer to an American, it's someone from the United States, not Canada or elsewhere in North or South America, though technically of course one can argue that they are all Americans.

Maybe they should just go back to calling it the First Division over in England. Seems easier and more straightforward. Of course then The Championship would also go back to being the Second Division, and I guess every has to have fancy names for their divisions these days.

As far as I can tell, no one with the Premier League or in the FA is calling it the British Premier League...this appears to be FSC's choice, not some edict from anywhere, unless they were pushed to call it the BPL and are claiming it "British" versus Barclay's.

Scotland just changed it to the system that is currently in place in England.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

The big story is that the SI cover is Mario Balatelli - the first soccer player to grace the cover that isn't US Soccer or World Cup related.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Yeah, FSC made that "British Premier League" thing up. It's properly either the Premier League or the Barclays Premier League.

Don't let Goodell hear that or we'll all be watching the Neutogena Football League in a few weeks. B
