World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

If ever I hit the jackpot I know what I'm financing...
a football stadium with a retractable roof that would easily sit 30,000+ for Alaska-Anchorage?? ;)

Gotta get some other use out of it out of the occasional soccer friendly, a possible olympic hosting ceremony site, and whenever the WWE is coming back from a Far East swing.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Just looking at the scoreline here... how close were we to seeing T'n'T upset Mexico tonight? A 1-0 victory on a goal after 80+ minutes isn't terribly convincing.

Replay just ended, and....not very. TnT didn't play horribly and its keeper had a real nice game, but at no point did it seem plausible they were going to find a way to win. At the same time though, Mexico didn't exactly look like world beaters.

Funny you should mention the Olympics, Anchorage is exploring a bid right now.

I've known that they're been considered a good spot to host a Winter Olympics up there. Gotta figure on having infrastructure to do it with. 30,000 would be a bit much for Seawolf football, even if they take the rest of the athletic department up to D1 status, but that would be about what you would want for an olympics I would think. And well, having a venue that size in Alaska should be able to make money somehow.

An Olympic bid is still gonna have to have a lot of money to make a successful Olympics. Stadium, Arenas, an Oval, ski jumps, roads, highway improvements. Thankfully we have mountains and good ski trails.

But we're getting off topic.

So Eddie Johnson, Alan Gordon, Matt Besler, and Omar Gonzalez (who won't be available until the semis) we're added to the team. Gomez, Onyewu (injuried), and two others I can't think of were taken off.

Right, but planning on getting a few things already set up and available to Anchorage ahead of time so that they don't have to worry so much about having White Elephants there when the Olympics are over isn't a bad way to plan things. Just the roads improvements alone in the area would be a big boost to the daily lives around the Anchorage area.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Looks like they put in the right guy on that corner (Eddie Johnson). :D

His comment after that it might not have been his fastest goal ever...hard to believe somebody could score one faster but I didn't check the actual running time from sub to goal. in terms of action it was instantaneous

Under FIFA rules, you're allowed to substitute during any stoppage in play, so I'd have to think that there's been a case where a sub came in and scored on a free kick that was closer to the goal than the corner, so that would technically be "faster." Of course, the fastest would be if a sub came in and scored a PK - don't know if that's ever happened, but with the huge number of games that have been played, even very unlikely events have probably happened a few times.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Even still: Johnson barely broke stride from the sideline to his header. Even a free kick or penalty wouldve involved him stopping to set himself up.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

I remember when I saw that. Was annoyed that the Salvadoreños were throwing stuff at them, then I saw him try to put on the shades. :D
I just kept thinking "I know that a lot of countries in CONCACAF wish they could be like Mexico, but this is probably not the way they should go about doing it".

Doesn't Mexico only do that when their own team plays poorly? Not when the other team is trying to employ the Jack Riley strategy?

It's not worth winning if you CAN'T WIN BIG!

I really don't feel like that is the US strategy...I know you say it as a joke and all but I just feel like under Klinsmann that winning isn't enough. If the US is suppose to and can dominate an opponent, than they **** well better go do it. It's not good enough to qualify for the world cup or get to the gold cup final, its about winning challenging yourself every day. Don't score a goal and sit back on your heals trying to stop an equalizer, keep pressing. I think its a great attitude to have. 2-1? not good enough, 5-1? not good enough. Obviously they can't be stupid about it but its the only one ball (puck) theory. Every minute we have the ball and are trying to score, they don't and can't.
