World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Tottenham are still fifth and Everton still sixth?

Unless Tottenham overcome a the huge goal differential they have with Chelski of course. Bale is good, but I don't see him getting them past a 16 goal differential going into the final game.
One can only hope.

Bob, I know we have not exactly seen eye to eye about the BPL but an honest question for you. How much longer should Wenger get? When I really first got into the BPL was when Arsenal was at their highest point (right around the invincibles era), now Wenger can find the good young talent but he can't seem to win any trophies. That then of course leads to selling that great talent after they have matured. I can't stand the Chelsea/Man City method of firing managers all the time but Wenger has been at Arsenal for a while now. Thoughts?

Wigan lose to Arsenal and are relegated. Arsenal go into the last day with a one-point edge over Spurs in fourth; Arsenal play at Newcastle and Spurs host Sunderland.

And Villa breathes a sigh of relief...until Benteke gets his first offer from Dortmund.

Good question that a lot of Arsenal fans are pondering, and have been for awhile. The reality is that Arsenal won't be likely to compete for major hardware as long as they run a tight fiscal ship and City/Chelski spend far beyond rational financial bounds. This is the reality facing 99 percent of teams. Arsenal is just a little different because prior to this new level of fiscal madness, Arsenal was competitive. I think Wenger has some weaknesses that have been exposed in recent years, but he still does a good job with what he has to work with. I don't see the club getting rid of him for a long while. It's not like someone else is likely to come in and do a lot more with the same resources Wenger has at his disposal. While I wish Arsenal were competing more meaningfully as they did ten years ago, the fiscal realities of the EPL are drastically different than back then. Back then you wouldn't have other teams swooping up Arsenal's best players on a regular basis as you do now. Maybe the financial fair play rules will bring things in line a little bit, but I'm doubtful. The sad reality is that nobody other than ManU (which has been built into a huge corporate conglomerate) without a huge sugar daddy spending tons of money is unlikely to be competitive except once in a while in a one-off type competition. Wenger has his issues, but he isn't the real problem in Arsenal's lack of competitiveness.

New Pompey Kit...so glad they're not with Kappa anymore.

I like the swoosh actually.

I can't remember where I saw this, but I read that if Arsenal beat Newcastle 2 - 1 and Chelsea and Everton draw 0 - 0, then Arsenal and Chelsea would be tied for third on points with the same number of goals scored and goals conceded, thereby necessitating a playoff game to determine who gets the automatic bye into next year's Champions' League knockout round and who has to go through qualifying rounds.

Fulham also ditching Kappa, in favor of Adidas. No reveal on the new kit yet.

True. And scheduling the playoff would be real interesting, as I've read that Chelski is going on a tour of the U.S. right after the season concludes.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Next week's Sports Illustrated catches us up on some of the stories from around the soccer world that may have flown under the radar recently, including:

England: Newcastle fans rioted after losing to Sunderland, setting fire to trash bins and one sloshed fan punched a police horse.
Greece: A match between AEK Athens and Panthrakikos was abandoned after AEK scored an own-goal and angry fans chased the team off the field.
Kenya: A referee has filed suit against the national soccer federation because he was rendered impotent after a manager protested a call by squeezing the referee's testicles.
Italy: His contract explicitly forbids him from racing go-karts, so Mario Balotelli took his $300,000 Ferrari onto a go-kart track and used it instead.
Austria: Fans of Rapid Wien were upset with their GM and got creative. They took brick and mortar and sealed up the offices. Then they put a picture of the GM on the new castle with the caption "I'm not allowed in."

And people say soccer is boring! I do remember seeing the video of the Newcastle fan squaring up with a horse.

That lives up to your handle. :D

Yeah, but the horse didn't have a glass jaw like the one in Blazing Saddles did. That all but took a dive for Mongo.

Greek Ultras are renowned nutjobs and, from what I understand, AEK is among the worst of the bunch:

Here's an article about the incident from a pro-ultras website:
