World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

So does this mean Arsenal is a much better squad than Barca, given that the Gunners went into Allianz and won 2-0 in the CL? :)

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

The sound you hear is FOX execs jumping out of windows now that they can't market Messi for the final.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Not only did Bayern win by 4 goals but Barcelona had 0 away goals too.

One doesn't want to seem overconfident but that is a realy steep hole to dig out of for Barca.

So Bayern scores 1 then Barca needs 6... that'd be hilarious

Yup, especially as yesterday Barca didn't even get a shot on goal until the 69th minute. I know that home and away makes for some differences, but still....

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

An amazing stat on Bayern. In 15 away Bundesliga matches, they have scored 37 and given up just 3 goals. If Barca pull this one out, it'll be one of the most amazing results in a very long time.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

I'm something of a Barca supporter (not nearly as much so as Fulham, but at least casually), and I have to say, man, Bayern are GOOD. Part of it is the amount of money they have to throw around, yes, but it's not like Barca are crying poverty either, and they just never even threatened. It'll be interesting to see if and how things change for them under Guardiola next year, but honestly, if it ain't broke...

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

I keep wanting to take more of an interest in Bayern, but if I hate the Yankees, Lakers, etc. in the US, why would I ever support a team that just outbuys its competition (you know, like almost every single club in Europe that has consistent domestic success?)

Edit: This is why I made my comment about Bayern's upcoming acquisition of Mario Gotze.

If you were so inclined, you could contradict this by pointing to the fact that a lot of their current success has been built around a core of home-grown players (Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Kroos, Badstuber, Muller).

Because you like to support a winning team for a change?? ;)

Unfortunately for me, my interest in European soccer was piqued by the Invincibles of 2004. They played soccer in a different manner than I had ever seen before. I was entranced. Since then they've almost become a farm team for the really rich clubs. They make a lot of money (especially on transfer fees) but do not win much hardware. I think 2004 was the last time they won anything.

As United fan, it's easy. :D (I liked them since I was 11 and knew nothing about the economics of world football.)

I'm surprised there was a lot of groaning at the fact United won the EPL. Usually, people despise SAF.

As for Bayern, I give them a ton of respect. Good mix of homegrown (or purchased really young) talent and smart buys.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

All fair points about Bayern.

My other sticking point with Bayern is that I loathe Robben. Not just for his awful theatrics and diving, but also because when I have been actively cheering for Bayern (like, say, in the CL Final against Chelsea), he's completely disappeared.

Did the German Football Federation put something in the drinking water?

4-1 Dortmund in the 68th minute.

The Bundesliga has been one of the best run leagues in the world for some time, it's finally starting to pay off huge now.

Other than Ajax and, to a lesser extent, Malmo FF, I do generally root against those that dominate their domestics leagues. If the Germans hold, I'd rather see BvB win number 2 than Bayern win number 5. However, I've never been able to work up that much dislike for Bayern.

Borussia? Really? That's pretty awesome.

I'm in the same boat, I think. As much as I like Bayern (and I'm a big fan of Schweinsteiger, Mueller, Kroos, Badstuber, etc.) and it would suck for them to be runners up for the third time in four years, it's more interesting to see Borussia claim some hardware.

Dortmund did win the Bundesliga last year and the year before, including a league-cup double last year; it's not like they've been starved for recent success.
