Fulham look set to corner the market in Riises, as it's being reported that a transfer fee has been agreed for John Arne to join Bjorn Helge.

There is an ET joke in there somewhere.

Question for the class: when a player puts in a transfer request, what changes? Downing has indicated he'd like to play for a CL contender, Villa rejects 12 and 15 million pounds and says "he isn't for sale". There is talk he'll then put in a transfer request...not clear what leverage that gives him and if it changes anything. Pretty sure Barry put one in the first year he tried to leave and Villa said no, play out the year.

Downing has 2 years left, perhaps if the offer gets to 20 million Villa will let him go anyway but wouldn't it make more sense to keep him until January, see where they are in the table and then make another decision as to transfer or hold until the summer, then, assuming he finishes the season a Villan, unload him with 1 year left?

More pressure on the club to sell to avoid having a malcontent. It'll tend to lower the minimum acceptable price that the club would consider, but as you noted with respect to Barry, it still doesn't make it a complete certainty that the player will be sold.

Another sign of the apocalypse:

Man City renaming their stadium from City of Manchester Stadium to Etihad Stadium for new endorsement deal.

This would never have happened in the Premier League before Manchester City came along!111!!

US-Mexico friendly August 10th 9pm in Philly

Why? No idea.

I'm actually siding with City on this. (Shocker, I know.)

It's the teams discretion to sell sponsor rights. However, I don't think places like Wembley, Old Trafford, St. James' Park or names with some history attached to it should sell sponsor rights. If it was the old Maine Road Stadium then people should be upset. However, the stadium is fairly new so the name hasn't had time to sink in.

Re: World Soccer XX: I paid Jack Warner $1M for the right to start this thread

Yeah, that's exactly right. I saw journalists on Twitter talking about how City were "losing their soul". If it was Maine Road, they might have had a point. But Eastlands (or CoMS, people can't even agree on what to call it ) is a rather soulless track and field venue converted into a soccer stadium, that City have only been playing in for 8 years. There's not a whole lot of soul there to lose.

Now, if the issue is that somehow they are skirting FFP, maybe that has some merit to it. Yet, City had the deal approved by UEFA, so it would be kind of silly (though I wouldn't put it past them) for UEFA to renege now.

If team A is making millions naming their stadium, other teams will follow. I don't know the first named stadium in the US, but now the smaller list is non-sponsored stadiums. Maybe it will go slowly in the EPL, but it will happen.

Sure. But my point is, City were not the first to name their stadium. You call it a sign of the apocalypse, but the apocalypse (if stadium naming rights deals are really apocalyptic) already occurred years ago.

That was a nice goal. The France defense was as effective as it was in 1940.

Re: World Soccer XX: I paid Jack Warner $1M for the right to start this thread

Oh England...

The result was certainly fair, but that's an awful way for it to turn out. I would have far preferred to see well-struck penalties saved rather than two misses.

Re: World Soccer XX: I paid Jack Warner $1M for the right to start this thread

So the SemiFinals of the Women's World Cup will exclude the #2 team (and two-time defending champion and host nation) and either #1 or #3.

Re: World Soccer XX: I paid Jack Warner $1M for the right to start this thread

It seems like the England women are trying to emulate the England men with their ineptness in penalty shootouts.

Re: World Soccer XX: I paid Jack Warner $1M for the right to start this thread

Predictably, there seems to be a race to call this the biggest upset in women's World Cup history. It's definitely surprising, but Japan is #4 in the world. Is #4 beating #2 truly the biggest upset ever?
