Predictably, there seems to be a race to call this the biggest upset in women's World Cup history. It's definitely surprising, but Japan is #4 in the world. Is #4 beating #2 truly the biggest upset ever?

I was trying to figure that one out myself.

Germany was the two-time defending champ and favorite to win again. In addition to being the #2 team in the world, they were hosting. They had never lost to not just a Japanese team, but an Asian team. On the other hand, Japan had just lost 2-0 to England and had never been to the semifinals of any major competition. And upsets in women's soccer are pretty rare anyway.

Tim Ream is very good for the Red Bulls. That being said, I think in the offseason I hope he goes abroad on a transfer. The MLS lacks skill players, moving to the EPL or Bundesliga will improve his game for international competition. Now he can use good positioning and ball handling to play great defense, he needs to learn how to defend against players who time runs better and have more technical ball skills.

I don't know, he's made a few very costly mistakes this year too. I'd be in favor of one more year in MLS.

I agree, this year he's made several bad mistakes, but I think his overall body of work indicates he needs to be facing stiffer competition.

I guess I'm just thinking, what if he goes to Europe without all the kinks worked out, gets a chance early on there and makes Titus Bramble's performances of a few seasons ago look competent? Then suddenly he's on the Freddy Adu/Jozy Altidore path of taking a tour of the countries of Europe in search of a fit. I'd rather he iron things out here so he could hopefully step into, and keep, a place in a starting XI overseas.

I see your point. There's a part of me that thinks Ream isn't going to work those kinks out playing in the MLS. I've seen him play twice in person and from field level you can see he non-chalantly uses his dribbling to take pressure off the ball and push it up field. I think in a European league he's going to have to figure out how to play better under duress (I think that's where he's had those gaffes this year). But as you stressed, an Adu/Altidore situation could arise and I think the only way to prevent that is him transferring to a league where he could at least be considered for minutes. I think in a mid to lower level team in the EPL he could step in at some point and earn a starting spot.

I'm not at all convinced that going abroad does a whole lot for a defender. The best defender the U.S. has ever had played his entire career in MLS, and that was when MLS wasn't as strong a league as it is today.

Sweden defeats Australia to advance to the SF. This eliminates Germany from the Olympics in London next year. The European teams will be Sweden and France.

So, going up against Didier Drogba, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez each week is a comparable challenge to going up against Josh Wolff, Carlos Ruiz, Kenny Cooper, etc.?
That's an interesting opinion.

Unbelievable start for the U.S. with a Brazilian own goal inside of the first two minutes.

I've only watched brazil for these 30 minutes but I can't imagine there's another women's player who complains more than marta

Re: World Soccer XX: I paid Jack Warner $1M for the right to start this thread

US Women have adopted the Men's style of immediately kicking the ball downfield and giving up possession any time they possibly can. They have never heard of passing the ball up the field.

Re: World Soccer XX: I paid Jack Warner $1M for the right to start this thread

That may be true but from what I've seen, they aren't capable of it
