Re: Norwich City back in the Premier League!

I like Portland more and more every day.
And I'm hating Portland more and more every day.

Like I said, they played a beat up and injured Seattle team at it's worst and only got a draw.

They are an expansion franchise...

Plus, don't you find it just a little hilarious that Sigi is complaining about the rain when he manages a team in Seattle?

Re: Norwich City back in the Premier League!

No, I wouldn't. Again, it's pretty much impossible to make the rule any simpler. Just don't talk about the dang referee. Is this really a difficult concept for SAF to master? He's 69 years old, has won countless trophies, and yet he can't act like an adult for 20 seconds? Please.

And yes, I totally think nice words can have an impact on the referee. Saying "Webb always screws us" is just as harmful as saying "Webb never screws us" because it plants the idea in people's mind that the referee may not be neutral. Or worse, it plants the idea in the referees mind that he has a reputation to either live up to or run away from.

I'll stay out of who said it but I agree that managers shouldn't be publicly implying that they prefer certain refs or that certain refs are more capable etc. Maybe some refs call a tighter/rougher game and that could end up to the benefit of one team...maybe the manager recognizes that...to the point made earlier, just skip pass it and ask for the next question. With all the gambling and all the questions of match fixing etc. the league should have a clear and wide line on what managers should say about the way a pending match will be officiated.

Udinese Selling Their Way To The Top

Fascinating article from The Swiss Ramble about how Udinese have achieved success using a business model based around unearthing talented players and making a profit in the transfer market.

And Seattle was missing 3 midfielders and a defender from their lineup.

Actually what Sigi is complaining about is the turf at Qwest Field, which by all accounts is crap. Unfortunately the Sounders are stuck with it because the Seahawks love the stuff and with UW moving in after next year the stuff is long term. But the Sounders don't like it and well complaining in the media about it after a big event that was marred by it is a sensible thing. I guess. Sigi isn't well liked in Seattle right now.

Sigi Responds

The rain, yes it rains in Seattle. It also rains down in Portland. It's a situation of the rain, yeah, is a little more conducive to what they do. All I'm trying to do is talk about the facts and not talk about other things. I don't think he should be talking about our players. Either that or they should stop calling about our players. That's one thing, because they've had interest in quite of few guys at some point. That's what it is. I'm going to send him a dozen roses since they are the Rose City, can't promise the pedals will be on the roses but we'll send him a dozen roses.

Re: Norwich City back in the Premier League!

No matter what hard on Garber gets for the Galaxy and RBNY, it's pretty clear that Seattle-Portland is already the best rivalry in the league. Bar none.
"Don Garber wants to create an NY-LA rivalry" is just speculation on the part of the author, who doesn't appear to understand the designated player rule. The owners of the Red Bulls have chosen to spend a whole lot of money on Henry and Marquez, and the owners of the Galaxy have chosen to spend a whole lot of money on Beckham and Donovan and Angel. NY-LA isn't any rivalry, let alone the best one in the league. NY-DC is where it's at anyway.

I disagree, Donkey Kong is the greatest video game ever.

Re: Norwich City back in the Premier League!

I'm currently given up on RBNY because I despise a couple of their signings. (Not just who you think.) I'm currently without a team so I could care less for NY-LA. Portland-Seattle already has laid the groundwork for a great rivalry.

If the Cosmos ever come back, I will support them. Until them, I am taking applications. :D

Congratulations to AFC Wimbledon for winning the Conference Playoff Final and being promoted to League 2. Reformed after the original team moved to Milton Keynes, it took them less than a decade to advance all the way to the Football League. Now to hope they pass up MK Dons very soon as well.

Portland with its record setting 5-0 home record now sits in second in the Western Conference with the 1-0 win over Columbus. They almost make set plays look easy. I just booked a flight to Chicago to watch the Portland-Chicago game in July with some vouchers I received.

This past Wednesday Porto defeated Braga 1-0 in the Europa Cup. I was pulling for Braga because Porto already has plenty of silverware in its history, but of Portugal's big three I lean toward the Dragons for no reason in particular.

Re: Norwich City back in the Premier League!

The Red Bulls played terribly last night and somehow got a draw out of it. Roy Miller has looked terrible defending set pieces and at some point either Matt Kassel or Tyler Lassiter deserve an opportunity to challenge for that spot. Also, I wonder if the Gold Cup call-ups will let some bench players push for more playing time. I think John Rooney is going to surprise the league, he's probably got the best touch on the team outside Agudelo, Henry, and Marquez.

All looking good so far for my preferred outcomes on "Survival Sunday".
