World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

England not even in the running for the World Cup?

Tba posted something similar a little while ago, and now we have an FA official saying the race is between Spain and Russia.

Claims of corruption in the 2018 World Cup bidding process by the English press have seriously damaged FIFA's reputation and that, in turn, has impacted badly on England's bid.

...

"If you know the way FIFA's mind works then it looks like we haven't got a prayer. Talk about our bid being harmed, well, that is the least that has happened. There has been a huge backlash and the word inside FIFA is that they won't be voting for England.

"Look, it doesn't mean I agree with their view. I don't. I am not saying it is wrong to expose vote-rigging and corruption, but there is a proper way of going about it.

"If the papers have the moral high ground and believe it is their right to investigate, then fine, but why didn't they take their findings to FIFA first, let them act, and then report it? The evidence should have been handed over to FIFA first."

So, the response to being exposed for rigging votes is to... collude to rig the vote! Brilliant!

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

I guess they would work, just wonder what kind of stadiums they're using there. referbished ones upgraded for the WC, or all new constructions.

Some of both I think. The Wikipedia article on the bid makes it looks like there are 6 current stadiums in addition to 9 that will be built new or are in the proposal stage.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

My concern was alays more with a home and home total goals format in the opening round. That doesn't really reward the top performing teams over a 30 game season and might be part of the reason 3 of the top 4 went down.

Portsmouth 0-0 QPR after 45 minutes.

QPR has not lost this year...quite impressive. Hoping that changes!

I can't quite decide how I feel about the prospect of QPR coming up to the Premier League. On the one hand, it'd be fun to have another derby match (and against a club that actually reciprocates the rivalry, even). On the other hand, the few QPR fans I've dealt with have been dicks.

I'm a big fan of proving your lack of corruption by having the event in Russia, one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

They are playing quite well.

Portsmouth went up in the 2nd half on a penalty. Lawrence actually missed, but the keeper jumped the gun so he got to retake. Then Lawrence apparently handled the ball in the 90th minute...though he showed a bruise on his chest, but nevertheless, Rangers tied it up on a Penalty. Lawrence kept arguing so he got sent off.

Frustrating draw, Pompey was so close to taking 3 points.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Didn't Fulham to use Loftus Road as a ground while Craven Cottage was being renovated? I bet QPR wasn't happy about that. :D

More World Cup speculation going around today, this time centering around the 2022 Korean bid.

Supposedly, it's Sepp Blatter's ambition to some day win a Nobel Peace Prize. So, good old Sepp has come up with the idea to let North Korea host some of the games if South Korea's bid wins for 2022. Football uniting the world and all that.

Marcotti's been tweeting about it, along with a few others.

By 2022, Kim Jong should be dead and the country will be in a constant political upheaval, sounds like a great plan to have tourists and players watching football there.

I'd put money on the North Korean regime either collapsing or transmogrifying to a crypto-capitalist Chinese model before 2022.

But be that as it may, the place it still going to be a hole. Have it in Japan, WC mascots are already weird and imagine what those folks would do with it.

I'm not sure why you say "would" as if this were a hypothetical question.

An Interesting idea, but I think it might be better to put that off to 2026 or 2030.

Yeah, it would really take North Korea a while to build their inferstructure up enough to handle even a few of the of the Pool games. Berlin is just getting to were the city is a lot more modern now, as they didn't do a whole lot of building when the city was split between East and West. Figure even if North Korea started gearing up right now and being all shiny with everybody else in the world, getting the sactions removed and all, it would still be a while until they're even on par with South Korea.

Except he is already inserting one of his sons as successor. So not sure there will be much political change.

His son's about as ambitious (and by all accounts as smart) as a stop sign. For the way Kim Jong has treated everyone around him, as soon as he's gone, there's going to be a lot of people coming out of the woodwork to seize political power and not help his son out.
