Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Seeing as he is less of a "traitor" than a victim of rampant xenophobia, I blame plenty of people other than Movsisyan for this one.
rampant xenophobia? interesting...more like a broken immigration system

It's not so much "broken" as "it frequently takes a long time and some people just don't have the patience or time for it".

In either case, I would also be curious to know how xenophobia somehow fits into the equation.

Right. And however broken it may be, it doesn't simply change on a whim for athletes who want to compete under a different flag.

Should it really take that long for someone that came here seeking asylum at the age of 13-16 and graduated from an american high school?

Because a climate of fear and populism has made it take longer to become American than it did 15 years ago, and any move to liberalize treatment of immigrants or applicants creates cries of terrorism and anti-Americanism.

But whatever. I would like to thank the audio guy in Zagreb for playing "In Your Eyes" three times back to back during halftime.

Well, no real argument there - I thought you were talking about xenophobia in this specific case, as if Yura had been targeted or something...

I'm not too clear on the rules when it comes to granting refugees asylum, but I was under the impression that you weren't necessarily granting citizenship when you do so.

What I'm saying is the guy is 23 now, went to high school here, which means he should know his american history, and he moved to america 8-10 years ago. How long should this process really take?

Fair point.

8-10 years of legal residency is more than enough to let someone take the test.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Scotland 0-1 Liechtenstein 2nd half

No, you're not reading that score from Hampden Park wrong.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

FT Croatia 0 - Greece 0.

FT Norway 1 - Portugal 0.

Scotland equalized against Liechtenstein.

France just took the lead in the second half through Benzima in Bosnia.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

They just don't have as many hoops to jump through.
How so? I mean, the essence of it is that you have to be a legal permanent resident for five years, right? Why wasn't Movsisyan eligible, I may have missed that part. Basically the same as in Sweden (picked at random), for example.

Also: Go Norway!

Maybe sheer volume is an issue, but you are eligible to APPLY after 5 years as a legal permanent resident. However, it can still take years after you apply to hear back.

Ah, I suppose that's true. I guess there probably is a long backlog, like there is at many government agencies.
