Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

There's a rumor that Newcastle are trying to sign Dutch forward Ricky van Wolfswinkel. I mention this only because it bears pointing out that "Ricky van Wolfswinkel" is an awesome name.

I'd have to call him Rocky van Bullwinkle:D

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

ESPN is reporting that Shay Given is set to join Fulham, if he passes a medical, which is apparently a question, as he's got a shoulder issue. And if he goes to Fulham, then Schwartzer would head to Arsenal.

If that's pending a medical then it's probably not going to happen, especially if he has a known issue.

Link?

I just saw a story from the Guardian saying he's staying at Manchester City.

Right. I should have added "even if this is true", since I've also seen conflicting reports about Given.

Saw that too. This was on the on-going transfer news on soccernet. It's a huge long on-going list, so a link doesn't do much good. The way this stuff goes, it's certainly not a done deal, of course.

Please let this happen. I've been deciding on which player I want to get a Newcastle jersey of and this would make it automatic. As it is Xisco is definitely in the running, but van Wolfswinkel would be the runaway victor. Having that with my Vennegoor Of Hesselink Hull City would be awesome.

Do they charge extra for all those letters? :D

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Dutch names in general are pretty sweet. I'm a big fan of Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.

There's quite a few good ones here:

My personal favorites are:

Ahmed Ahahaoui (I'm just imagining how it's pronounced)
Rachid Bouaouzan (5 vowels in a row!)
Cerezo Fung a Wing
Reza Ghoochannejhad
Karel Gleenewinkel Kamperdijk
Guus van Hecking Colenbrander
Orpheo Keizerweerd
Maik van den Kieboom (ka-boom?)
Jeffrey Leiwakabessy
Jörg van Nieuwenhuijzen
Jelle ten Rouwelaar
Cees Schapendonk
John Schot (only funny if you're a WCHA guy...)
Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink
Charley van de Weerd
Ricky van Wolfswinkel

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

So US Soccer extended Bradley for 4 more years according to Sportscenter, but I don't see any links on it.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Soccernet's latest now says Given is staying put at City, so Schwartzer is likely to stay at Fulham. Meaning Arsenal are likely stuck with Almunia and company for yet another year. I knew it was too good to be true that Wenger would spend a little money to bring in a an at least fairly good keeper.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Well, I'm going to try and not hold this against Bob.

Gulati, on the other hand, better do well with his economics background in securing the US bid for 2022, or I'm going to be very disappointed.

From a comment on Goff's blog:

Bradley built a defense first team that gave up early goals in 3 of 4 games. We played from behind most of the tournament. In tournament football, you actually have to win a game now and then. In 4 games, including the extra time against Ghana, the US team played 390 minutes of football, and had a lead for exactly THREE MINUTES.

I guess I'll be looking to see some evolution from the US side over the next few years. I'd love to see Bradley hire an assistant or two who can really address some of the team's tactical deficiencies - but we won't really be able to judge that for a while yet.
