World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Well, an extension isn't the worst thing in the world, especially if Klinsmann wasn't interested or affordable.

4 years though?! If you want to extend him, why not until after the Gold Cup, or even until summer of 2012, after the Euros, when a new manager might be available.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Not looking good now for Arsenal getting the keeper they need. Arsene knows, but . . . .

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

From a comment on Goff's blog:
Somehow, a completely mistaken meme developed that Bradley's team was defensively-oriented or defense-first. It's completely contrary to the facts, and yet the Adu fanboi crowd persists in pushing it.

Bradley would be crazy to take only two more years. There's absolutely nothing major for the U.S. in two years (the big stuff is the Gold Cup next year, qualifying and maybe Confeds Cup in 2013, and the World Cup in 2014).

I'm assuming they wanted him, he wasn't that expensive and he said he wanted a 4 year commitment.

Simple question: Is Bob Bradley thought of as a better coach right now than Bruce Arena was after the US' run to the quarterfinals in the 2002 World Cup?

Well, I wouldn't get hung up on the phrasing, but for as strong as the performance was at the WC, it was remarkable due to the intestinal fortitude rather than the actual quality of play.

Bradley's bigger problem is that his tactical decisions don't seem to shift given personnel. He kept trying to go to the formula that worked for the Confederations Cup, except that he didn't have the horses to do it without Davies.

Hell, in the Confederations Cup, he didn't have the horses to do it until he was forced into attacking in the last group stage game, needing at least 3 goals and a big win from Brazil.

Right, but the USSF shouldn't have to cater to Bradley. Just because he wanted 4 years doesn't mean he needed to be given 4 years.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Groups of 8 meaning a 14-match double-round-robin? Long qualifying schedule.

No matter who they got (unless it was an interim appointment), it was going to be for four years. That's not catering to Bradley, that's the reality of every national team outside of Europe being on a four-year cycle.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

This will change obviously, but here's the top 16 teams from last time around:

Group 1
Mexico
Costa Rica
Panama
Jamaica
Haiti
Canada
St. Vincent and the Grenadines
Suriname

Group 2
U.S.A.
Honduras
Trinidad and Tobago
Cuba
Guatemala
Guyana
Barbados
Bermuda

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Is it really any longer, or just shifted around?

Well, currently - the top teams get a bye into the second round, a home and home series. (2). Those that advance move on to 4 team groups, home and home (6), and then the Hex (10).

So, that's 24 teams -> 12 -> 6, meaning you'd need at least one more set of games to get to 16, rather than 24...

If it were me, I would have offered Bradley 2 more years, take it or leave it. If he leaves it, I go interim. Just me though.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

New CONCACAF qualifying = joke.

We better win the '11 Gold Cup, because that's the only way we're going to get serious competition between now and 2014.

And if I were Bradley and the offer was for 2 years (regardless of the money), I'd walk.

If the USSF wants flexibility, then you negotiate that in the buyout provisions - but the contract has to be for 4 years.
