World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

I do hope Spain-Portugal is exciting, I think there's a decent chance that one could play out like this match just did though.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

I happen to think things are coming together for Spain. Two goals in each of the last two games and only goal given up was off a deflection. Portugal can't go the whole tournament without giving up a goal. My only concern with Spain would be Torres. He's a bit rusty. I'll take Spain 1-0 in 90 minutes.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

I thought that was a little harsh on DeBleeckere, it's not his fault his linesman blew the call.

And I thought the other one was a bit of a cheap shot. After all, we've already seen photographic evidence that Paraguay is not lacking in milk. :D

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Good stuff from Casillas. Looked like a Portugal foul on the rebound IMO.

Question, have the refs in La Liga caught on to Ronaldo's antics?

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Donovan's PK goal was in off the post. It seems like they cede about 80% of the net to the keeper and shoot around the edges.

Several of the penalties taken today were down the middle. At least 3 I think.

It's often the easiest way to score but the most risky.

That's mainly because if they shoot for the edges, even if the goalie guesses correctly, it'll still make it in.

If you go for anything but the edges, you're basically asking for a 50/50 shot at best.

(that said, I wonder how a shooter would do going straight down the middle at about head height, since most goalies dive before the ball's even kicked).

Well, I distinctly recall this PK from Jaime Moreno against his old teammate, Nick Rimando:

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zMrKB75V-3g&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zMrKB75V-3g&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

As the announcer said, that's 'cheeky.'

(Actual PK I'm talking about is at about 1:10).

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

That goal was only a matter of time with the way Spain was turning up the pressure in the last five minutes.

David Villa almost missed his own rebound because the eventual goal ended up grazing the cross bar and going down in. Just a touch higher and that ball doesn't go in and we're still level.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

What a novel concept, following up your shot by running at the goalkeeper and burying the rebound.

Brilliant finish by Villa.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

BBC only showed one replay of the goal, but he looked to be about 2 yards offside. Anyone else see that?

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

This guy has let a ton of **** go though, I appreciate letting them play and not buying the dives but he has missed some obvious fouls.

This is the World Cup and not the World Diving Championships. :D There have been some misses, but I'd rather the whistle be kept in the pocket than calling a foul every three seconds.
