World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Great goal for South Korea. First goal Uruguay have surrendered in the World Cup.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

On the one hand I'd like to see CONCACAF get another slot, but on the other hand, I don't think I can see anyone other than the US and Mexico advancing without a pretty big fluke (Costa Rica in 1990 was the last one), whereas at least the European sides that didn't generally have a creditable shot at doing so (Italy and France stunk up the joint but have won the tournament before, Switzerland beat Spain and advanced out of their group in 2006, Slovenia was on the brink of advancing, to pick a few examples).

Also, I figured out why I detest Uruguay: it's like watching the New Jersey Devils. Dull as watching paint dry.

They sat back too much on to protect the one goal lead, they did that most of the second half. Far too early to have done that. Lucky for them they do have that extra gear there and they got that damm pretty goal by Suarez there.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

I have a feeling Ghana is going to be fairly defensive today also, and rely on set pieces to score.

So it will be up to the US to not turn over the ball and give counter attacks that lead to corners and free kicks.

I like that the US has shown ability to overcome deficits and has scored several 2nd half goals.

On the other hand I don't like how shaky the US looks in the first half, even against Algeria when they didn't concede (but probably should have).

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

So now at least two South American teams will be in the last 8.

At most, half of the 8 can be from South America. Strong tourney for their region.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

US team:
Howard; Cherundolo, DeMerit, Bocanegra, Bornstein; Donovan, Bradley, Clark, Dempsey; Findley, Altidore

Clark replaces Edu, Findley replaces Gomez, other than that no changes from the team that beat Algeria.

Over there! Over there! Send the word, send the word, over there! That the Yanks are coming, THE YANKS ARE COMING, the drums drum drumming everywhere! So prepare, say a prayer, send the word, send the word over there! We'll be over, we're coming over, and we won't come back until its over over there!!!!! GO USA!!!!

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

But what's the point of speed when you can't do anything with the ball once you receive it?

Well, I think some would argue that he doesn't have to do anything with the ball. His speed keeps the defense less compact, creates chances for those who can finish like Donovan, Dempsey, Altidore (I hope).

Watching the replay after the game, I'm pretty sure the ball actually hit/grazed the defender's head. The angle they showed from kinda behind Suarez, you can see the ball kinda change directions, and begin to spin more, as it passes the Korean defender. Either way, pretty amazing goal.

That it was.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

This definitely has the look of a very defensive 1-0 type game. If the US can score first (hopefully early), it will force Ghana to open up a bit and could lead to another goal for the US.

Saying that, I think this game could very well go to penalties, and fortunately we have a great keeper.
