The ironic thing is, Cote d'Ivoire need Brazil to beat Portugal if they themselves want to advance, and now they've ensured that Brazil will be missing an essential player.

And Brazil has already advanced, so it's not like they're playing for anything more than pride.

Kaka deserved that 2nd yellow, even though the CIV player embellished quite a bit on it.

Just went back and looked at the play. That was disgraceful.

For all the commentator complaining I'm thinking "he still elbowed him in the chest".

Fair would be a yellow to Kaka for elbow,
and a red to the IC diver for shaming his country and his sport.

Am I the only one who doesn't equate the entire country with their soccer team? :)

Yes, diving and flopping infuriates me. But FIFA apparently doesn't want to crack down on it, so it's in everyone's best interest to keep trying to get those fake calls. With 1 ref on a field that size (even if there're 3 others assisting to some degree), a lot of things will be missed, or will be too far away to see clearly.

Add more refs (sure seems to work for hockey and football), actually penalize embelleshing and falling down for no apparent reason.... and maybe it'll stop. But it needs to be across the board and continuously enforced. And good luck with that.

Kaka didn't deserve the yellow, but Dunga should've taken him out so Kaka wouldn't even be in that situation. I would've taken him out and not played him vs. Portugal. Do cards get wiped out to 0 at the beginning of the knockout stage?

I wonder what Ireland thinks of France laying down like the cowards they are.

He didn't deserve it? For blatantly elbowing someone in the chest away from the play?

Not for that. The guy ran into him, and he raised his arm in self defense. There are a lot worse that aren't even called fouls (see: the 3rd goal the Americans scored against Slovenia).

If Kaka's offense was worthy of a yellow, then two or three Slovenians should have been sent off on that one play alone. Not to mention those dirty Kiwis, ruthlessly attacking the poor, defenseless Italians.

if you're playing with a caution in the game, you should go out of your way to not draw the attention of the officials. Kaka got what he deserved.

This was my exact thought - if Kaka's play was the standard for yellow cards, the US should have been able to score about 10 goals against the 5 Slovenians left on the pitch by the end of the game...

He didn't just hold his arm out, he jabbed him in the chest with his elbow. The holding the face and writhing on the ground bit was over the top though.

Kaka deserved what he got. Whether other people should have also gotten penalized is open for debate, but Kaka deserved a yellow for that. The whole concept of giving a yellow is to warn players to knock it off. Not start smacking each other away from the play...

If that's your definition of 'smacking'...

Do cards get wiped out to 0 at the start of the next round?

No clue. I was always under the assumption that it was two yellow cards in the tournament not just consecutive games and they stayed with you throughout the tournament.
