World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

I know it's The Onion, and I know snark is what they do, but I think they totally missed with this article. Hacky crap like this was funny 10 years ago, now it's just wrong.

Indeed. The Confed Cup final got like a 3.9 rating on ESPN(?). All us hockey fans know how good a number that is comparatively.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

So MLS question: Do you think they'll ever try to do a Euro-style schedule? Or are factors such as climate, competition for viewers, and what not too much to change the schedule?

We already play a schedule in a similar style to such European nations as Russia, Norway, and Sweden.

Anyone doing a pick'em contest for the World Cup? I have a pool on ESPN for co-workers, and I know CBS Sportlsine is doing a contest.

A very interesting read, I think US amateur sports needs a massive rethink. The fact that our basketball, baseball and football players aren't the best they could be doesn't really matter. We have the sheer numbers that anyone not from America (or the Dominican) that is truly elite level can be dismissed as an outlier.

But soccer, we can't just "throw America" at the problem and expect results. We need to get proactive, be it orienting things around the Dutch "hyperorganized" model, or somehow shifting to a Latin American/African "free play" model.

The problem with any discussion of youth soccer is that it needs to be grounded in what they are already doing today, not what they were doing ten to fifteen years ago that is only showing up on a professional level today. A lot of discussion from people who aren't intimately involved in youth soccer tends to fall into that trap, assuming that the problems we see today need to be addressed today. Many times, they were already addressed in some fashion several years ago, but the results of the changes haven't had time to work through the system yet.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

The best way to fix Youth soccer in the US going forward is to ban children from playing any other sports.

Then we will be getting our best youth talent and our best youth coaches into the system, and that will eventually help the MLS and national teams.

Various reports on Twitter this morning have said that Rio Ferdinand has injured his knee "severely" in training today and is at the hospital for an MRI.

That's my Rio! Always getting hurt BEFORE the big matches. That's why I like Vidic better. At least he isn't as brittle as a China Doll.

I presume this was funny, or at least, it was intended to be.

Which is why I thought this article from ESPN on the MLS Youth Academies provides a much better roadmap.

It's a similar model, but it's one that's meant to work within some of the current strictures of American athletics and education.
