World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Just saying that the incident last summer was what really pushed people over the top on him.

By "incident", I hope you're not going back to his Confederations Cup celebrations. There was nothing unusual about them.

My grandfather was born in Quebec, but my Dad doesn't root for the Habs/Canada. He grew up in Boston. I've seen this a ton with Italian-Americans I know and just don't get how they root for Italy over the US. I'm convinced it has more to do with Italy having a greater soccer history. If they didn't, I'm sure they'd be on the US bandwagon. I think that applies with Rossi, unfortunately.

LOL at serious talk about TBA and his Indian cricket fandom.

Ok, just stop with the professional team allegiances. Not the same thing.

Again, good for him if he wants to play for Italy. So long as he realizes the consequences of that choice.

So you took one part of it and ignored the other. If you want to be that specific, fine. When the US played Canada for Gold, my father was not rooting for Canada just because his dad was born there. Jeez.

You thought there wasn't. All I'm saying is, a lot of people did. That's all.

MLS Exploring TV Deal with Versus?

MLS executives are said to be impressed with the way Versus has treated its coverage of the National Hockey League, which is a banner property for the cable sports network. Versus often talks of its ability to "super-serve" fans of the sport, and has seen a solid uptick in numbers since its deal to return to DirecTV and into this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Right, and that little part of it really undermines the rest of your argument.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Key part - they'd be looking to shop the current package they have withe FSC, not the one with ESPN. Giving up ESPN would be stupid, but Versus could be a nice step up over Fox Soccer.

Proving your point, I had literally never heard of Fox Soccer.

 How have you never heard of FSC? Unless you don't watch soccer, or don't live in the US.

I watch them nearly every weekend during the european seasons.

Depends on how many games Versus agrees to show. If they only want to do something similar to FSC - Mainly 1 game a week, in some cases 2- then I think sticking with FSC is the right call. On the other hand, if Versus would offer to show 4-5 games a week, I think you have to jump all over that if you're Don Garber and MLS.

If it aint on basic cable (and it has never been in any market I've lived in) then for me it is a rumor of a myth of an ancient tale.

The point is, I'd love to see a move to Versus, which I have.

Same here. I'll pay money for the expanded basic or whatever package, and the only other thing I'll be shelling out extra money for would be HBO. I like Soccer, but I'm still not getting the sports tier.

Versus is on my TV now, FSC is not.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

I'm not having any problem with him getting jeers from the USA fans for him being left off the roster.

Taking it very personally might be a little much.

Now you don't sound like a true american.

Wait a second, you aren't a true american. And here I am having communication with you.

Only true americans know what it feels like to have someone play for Italy instead of the US of A...I'm going to Foxwoods to ask them

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

That would be a great move for MLS. Obviously, FSC has done well by MLS- they certainly don't have in-game breaks to talk about Tiger Woods' ego or NBA-themed halftime reports unlike a certain network that will remain nameless.

But Vs. is a little more accessable for most people, and I think that Vs. is getting closer towards getting more universal distribution on our nation's cable providers (I haven't had problems getting Vs. on basic cable ever since they picked up the NHL, but I keep hearing people claim that they can't find it). I would love to see Vs. continue to grow and eventually become a solid rival to That Other Sports Network.

Networks Battling Until Last Minute Over Who Has To Air World Cup

NEW YORK—The bidding war over the 2010 FIFA World Cup continues to rage between television networks, with multimillion-dollar sums being offered for the rights to show something other than soccer's greatest spectacle. "When the World Cup begins this June, millions of viewers across the nation will be tuning into something, anything, else," said ESPN program director Lisa Hibbing, whose network is currently losing the bidding war and may be forced to air more than 60 matches. "Considering ESPN's main demographic—young male sports fans—and taking into account the time difference between the U.S. and South Africa, and reflecting on our reputation as a sports channel, we'd much rather be showing car-product infomercials at that hour of the morning.
