World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

I'm not defending him, but in looking at his int'l career, he's played exclusively for Italy, and since 2003. Why are people getting so angry at him now? Obviously I'd love to have him on the US team, but doesn't that indicate he cast his lot a long, long time ago?

Watch his celebrations against the US from last summer.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Sorry if this topic has been beaten to death, but I can't for the life of me understand how in soccer's "Super Bowl", there are constant complaints about the ball. Why is this just coming up now? Why introduce a different ball weeks before your biggest event? I love the game, but I simply can't understand this.

Mel Brooks in Spaceballs said it best. "Merchanizing!!!" FIFA makes more money with a new ball released just for the World Cup.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

They always complain about the World Cup ball. Every 4 years the players go bonkers, especially the keeper.

Adidas is trying to make the perfect ball using technology but it seems like they're only making the ball less predictable.

And players hate unpredictable.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Maybe if he asks really nicely, Rossi can play soccer for the US at the World Cup.

He'd have to kiss my *** first. Then I'd demand that he kiss your fat ***, just for the sheer humor value.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Players who have problems with the ball curiously seem not to be endorsed by adidas. Players supporting the ball curiously seem to be endorsed by adidas, or play for teams that are. I wonder what could account for this strange coincidence?

Personally, I think complaints about the ball are a load of trash, just players looking for something to blame other than themselves. Plus, as some adidas guy said yesterday, the ball was introduced nearly 6 months ago. It's been used in numerous leagues already, and copies of the ball were distributed to the various national teams, and yet we haven't heard complaints until right now? Come on.

Thanks. If that's all true, then I agree with you all the way.

Can't switch at this point. Has already played for Italy in competitive internationals.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Suck it, Rossi.

Okay, he's only 22 and it would have been remarkable for him to make the team, but still... we're talking about the USA at the World Cup here, let's take the victories as they come.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Watch his celebrations against the US from last summer.

If you're talking about the Confederations Cup, just watched both his goals on youtube and didn't see anything out of the ordinary...

They did a dogpile sort of thing after his first goal, which is fine I guess. I just think maybe he could have been a little more reserved. Like I said in the previous thread, I don't consider him a traitor or anything like that, but I certainly can understand why people dislike him.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

One thing to compare the Rossi/Confed Cup thing to would be how Lukas Podolski refused to celebrate after scoring against the Polish in Euro 2008 (Podolski was born in Poland, but plays for Germany).

Exactly. Was trying to think of an international example, that's a pretty good one.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Eh, so he's not supposed to celebrate? Didn't see a dog pile either. I don't care about that stuff. I am, however, certainly upset at him not wanting to play for the US.

Yep, my fault, was thinking of Italy's 2nd in that match, where they all piled on top of each other near the bench.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Now? People have been angry at him for quite some time.

Exaclty. I hate him for the fact that he considers himself American in all parts of his life except when he plays soccer. He's a traitor, a Judas, and the way he celebrated like he did after his goals at the Confederations Cup was like a big F you to the US.

I hope he blows out his knee and never fulfills his dream.

Yes, I'm serious.

Again, there was nothing out of the ordinary with his celebrations at the Confederations Cup. I don't like him either, but that's not part of the reason.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

As seen on ESPN Los Angeles:

Some American fans brandished Rossi a traitor, forgetting, perhaps, that several foreign-born players with American connections -- midfielders Thomas Dooley and Earnie Stewart, whose fathers were American servicemen in Europe, and forward Roy Weglerle and defender David Regis, who were married to Americans -- played important roles for the U.S. national team.

Whoa. Whoa. BTFU.

Thomas Dooley? German born and raised son of an American serviceman. When he joined the US team in 1992, there was no way in hell he was going to make the German team and to go from Germany to the USA, then, was a definite step down.

Earnie Stewart? Same exact story, just swap German for Dutch.

David Regis? First, I don't see how a guy who had 27 caps in his career and never played in a World Cup game "played an important role for the national team," but he's of a similar story with Dooley and Stewart in that he would have never made his national side (France) and had an out through his marriage.

"Weglerle?" Oh, you mean Roy Wegerle. You could make an argument for him, since he was South African - not a step down to the US from there.

If Rossi were, say, Venezuelan and had chosen to play for Venezuela instead, I wouldn't have had a problem with that, especially if he wasn't talented enough to make the US team, but even then - if you want to try and hack it with a weaker side, be my guest. But when you've got the obvious talent, and you turn your back on your home country for one higher on the food chain, that's when you become a traitor.

EDIT: Or, if you're from Boston...

I thought all soccer players signed an oath mandating they run around like little girls or Cafe posters at a Lady GaGa concert after each goal.
