World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

We're talking about the World Cup, thats a little different than FC Dallas. I'd go do Dallas for the opening match!

I know, I just feel like the opener could be used as a carrot, or as a reward for a city that has embraced the sport.

I'd go to Dallas for the opening match, definitely. Just saying I think it could be a Wisconsin or NoDak playing in the Final Five scenario, with all the Mexican fans that are likely to be there.

Why would mexican fans pay to go see USA vs Denmark/South Korea/Ghana etc?

Because they enjoy watching soccer, have the money to do so, and really dislike the USA.

If Minnesota is playing in a hockey regional in Madison, I'm definitely going, even though I likely don't care who they are playing. Because, (a) I like college hockey and (b) want to root against the Gophers

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

What are the chances they could alter the starting venue to say a new stadium built in Greater Los Angeles for the LA Jaguars?

I know its been referenced that the Bay Area and Chicago could be added as host cities later in the process after the bid is awarded.

My understanding is that they've left placeholders in for either new NFL Stadiums (LA, SF, potentially places like DC) and for other cities (Chicago) to re-enter the mix.

I'd also expect that the exact locations for the opening game, the final, etc could all change, but I don't blame them for putting more international-friendly cities in the prominent positions as a means to help win the bid.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Mexico has fully endorsed a US bid for the Cup, since they know they won't be in a position to host anytime soon, and so many venues would be within easy reach and/or already draw large Mexican crowds. If that's the political calculus that's necessary to win the right to host, I'm fine with that.

Not if you Mexico is playing Philadelphia? You idea is certainly true for a friendly game but I don't really see it happening for a world cup. I highly doubt American supporters would be outnumbered in a 2022 world cup game?

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I'm not surprised to see Henry might sign with the Red Bulls. I am surprised he is playing for France in the World Cup.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

What do you mean a practice? Aren't they bidding on both 2018 and 2022 at the same time? Why does Europe get the next one? It hasn't been in NA since 1994 :p I guess it shouldn't be in Americas twice in a row...

US is the only non-European county bidding for 2018. That one is expected to go to England, with Russia having an outside shot.

The bidders for 2022 are Japan, South Korea, Qatar, and the US. The US seems to be the favorite, however, I've seen some articles where FIFA wants to get the WC in the Middle East and Qatar seems to have the cash to back up their bid.

Also helping Qatar is the fact that Mohammad Bin Hammam is competing with Sepp Blatter for the FIFA presidency. Tossing a World Cup his way would probably help placate him a bit

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

25k this afternoon in Philly for a ET goal to tie 1-1...exciting game, the FCD goalie made several stellar saves...Union has several players that are exciting...some because they are skillful, some because you never know when they'll do something really dumb. Seitz got several cheers for stopping routine shots...the crowd recognizes he is off to a rocky start, especially on the ones you'd think he'd stop.

Next home game is in June, the new stadium should be ready.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Qatar would be a disaster. Security disaster.

Also bringing Westerners to a country that bans beer and western dress...sure what a brilliant plan.

Stop supporting terrorism, get a WC bid.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

If they're ever to consider the Middle East I would think the UAE would be western enough to host, but I have no idea if they have the infrastucture to host such an event. Never mind all the money they have tied up in all those man made islands they need to save their economy since the oil reserves are drying up.

That is the biggest reason that they wouldn't win. That and the oppressive heat, although they've pledged to build air-conditioned stadiums and underground practice facilities.

Australia is bidding on 2018 and 2022?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but drinking isn't totally banned in Qatar correct? Muslims are forbidden, but I thought there were places for Westerners to buy booze?

Wouldn't be unheard of. In Morocco, Bahrain and UAE for instance there are liquor stores and bars, and in Saudi there are compounds within which the liqour is quite abundant. Never tried to drink in Oman so I don't know what their rules are.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Looking way down the line at the 2018 World Cup, the US presented their bid proposal today.
Steve Goff provides some details:
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2010/05/bill_clinton_world_cup_bid_sir.html
-Initial draw in NYC
-Finals draw in Miami
-First game in Dallas

Like I said, a ways away, but I don't necessarily like opening up in Dallas.
Yeah, would rather see the opening some place like LA, or NYC perhaps.

My understanding is that they've left placeholders in for either new NFL Stadiums (LA, SF, potentially places like DC) and for other cities (Chicago) to re-enter the mix.

That would help us a lot, having Mexico and ideally, Canada backing a US bid. Both of them are probably a ways away from being able to host a WC, although Canada probably is closer.

Philly might be the one USA site that could give the Azteca a run for its money. I don't belive bags of urine have ever been thrown at Santa Clause at the Azteca, yet. ;)
