World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Wouldn't it also be prudent to have a few guys on hand to address the risk of injury taking one of the top 23 out of consideration?

The rule on replacing injured guys is a bit weird. If a player gets injured from now until the 31st, his replacement must come from one of the 30 players on the "list" (even though Brazil named their 23, I still think they have to submit a list of 30 to FIFA). From June 1st until 24 hours before the first game, any injured players can be replaced by any player eligible to play for the US.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

All I want from the US in the world cup is for them to play up to their potential. I am tired of them laying an egg on the world stage.

They should be able to get out of the round robin, and depending who they draw they should be able to get out of the first knock-out phase.

I don't think they are good enough to get past a semi-final. Unless there were a bunch of upsets earlier.

Yes, out of the group is a must. However, if we finish 2nd in the group, we likely get Germany in the first knockout game. So I don't know about beyond that.

You mean like they did in 2002? And in the Confed Cup? Jeez, one bad World Cup in a brutal group and they're a bunch of choking chokers who choke when the pressure is on.

Umm one bad WC?

- They were pretty brutal in Germany even though they advanced. Albiet from a tough group. They choked that Germany round-of-16 game away.
- South Korea/Japan was obviously crap (0-1-2).
- France? 0-0-3.

1994 was obviously great because we advanced without much expectation and it was in the US.

I would just say I'm sick of them not being able to put together back to back positive showings in the world cup. Obviously that isn't as big a deal as it was under the old "seeding" format.

1990 R1 23rd
1994 R2 14th
1998 R1 32nd
2002 QF 8th
2006 R1 T-25th

We need to get out of our group consistently.

I think you're a little confused. South Korea was where we advanced to the quarters. Germany in '06 we lost-drew-lost and went out early.

Right, SK/Jap was 1-1-1 and Germany was 0-1-2. But the point still stands.

Also, prior to this Confed Cup had we ever qualified for it? and have we ever done anything in it? I'm pretty sure no one in the US knew that existed until we beat Spain.

You beat Ghana in the 3rd game in Germany and I'm happy with their success in building a consistent winner :P

As for the Confed Cup, yes the US has participated 4 times...it hasn't been around very long in its current form. 1997? US last qualified in 2003. Finished 3rd in 1999.

Count me as somebody else who will be satisfied with getting out of the group. Everything after that is gravy, although we have unfinished business with the ze Germans (see Frings, Torsten) and Ghana (see Merk, Markus), so I'd love a second shot at one of those two.

Otherwise, Go Fulham Go!

A few times actually, and got to the semifinals once but the Confed Cups profile hasn't definitley changed since it was a Sepp Blatter afterthought played in Saudi Arabia or a random country. Mexico won the 1999 Confed Cup without ever leaving the Cozy confines of Azteca and in a tournament where the reigning world champs declined to participate.

Well, the format of the Confed Cup has greatly changed over the years, we have played in it before, but I think the circumstances were a little different.

Plus ESPN picking up the rights to it was huge for its' increase in interest

Yes, the performance in Germany in 2006 sucked, in a tough group as I mentioned. I don't know how you could call 2002 in Japorea anything but a success, though, beating one of the pre-tournament favorites, gutting out a tough draw against the hosts, and beating our biggest rival in an elimination match before going out to another traditional powerhouse. Yes, France 1998 sucked, but we were pretty clearly still in an early developmental stage at that point. MLS had only existed for a few seasons, and we were depending on scavenged players like Thomas Dooley and David Regis for serious contributions.

Yes, we had qualified for the Confederations Cup before: in 1999 we qualified due to being the runner-up in the 1998 Gold Cup and finished third; in 2003 we qualified due to winning the 2002 Gold Cup and did not advance from a group that included Cameroon, Turkey and Brazil. I'm not sure why the fact that a lot of people weren't aware of the tournament's existence is at all relevant.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

According to Ives Galarcep via Twitter, Eddie Johnson picked up a "serious hamstring injury" playing for Aris today. That makes the forwards situation for the USA more interesting.

And I'm surprised there isn't more kvetching about Freddy Adu (who, IMHO, has been pretty unimpressive in Europe, really) not being named to the 30. There's more regarding Charlie Davies, but no one can argue that if the doctors say he's not fit, then he's not fit.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I don't think anyone is complaining about Adu not making the team. Either he's nowhere near as good as he was hyped to be, or he's simply not being given the opportunity to succeed overseas. IMO, he should be back in the States playing regularly.

I totally agree. He should've waited a couple more years and then went. Or he should do what Landon Donovan is doing with the loan deal during the off-season. Freddy should try to get back to the states.

Part of it is how Americans are treated abroad. They're simply not treated the same when they go over and don't get the same opportunities.

He seems to have worked his way into a regular role for Aris though, I don't know if the States would necessarily be a better scenario.
