Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

I watch the EPL Review Show every Sunday night and Bobby Zamora of Fulham really caught my eye with his performance against Manchester United...how old is he? Is he a rising star?

He'll be 29 in January. He's had a great run of form and hopefully he gets an England call up.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Hi everyone!

Just getting into football here. I am going to England for two weeks in January as part of a J-Term Study abroad class. Class is called the History of Soccer. Going to at least one EPL game. Not sure what team to cheer for (besides Man U no way). Although the team I am supposed to do research on is Aston Villa. So I might have to go with them for now.

I will keep you guys posted :)

If you can pick any team, Aston Villa is a good one to follow.

I also like West Ham and being American, Fulham isn't a bad choice either.

Enjoy your time over there, if you have any questions let us know.

Here are two. So what clubs are considered the most successful year after year in EPL?

What is the 2nd most hated team in the EPL?

ManU, Arsenal and Chelsea are the three most successful clubs in the EPL. Only 4 teams have ever won the EPL, the aforementioned three and Blackburn when they bought a title in 1995.

The second most hated team in the EPL is most likely Chelsea. They don't have years upon years of history, but they've bought their way into contention and have been pretty amazing in this decade.

F Man U!!

Lucky bugger, that sounds like a pretty cool class.

How old is the Premier League if only 4 teams have ever won it?

People say American sports have no parity, but that's freaking ridiculous.

The best way to think about it is to picture college football. Each nation's league is kinda like one of the BCS conferences - you've got a couple of well established powers that always win, and over the long term those results are fairly static.

The real competition isn't between, say, Indiana and Ohio State within the leauge, it's between Ohio State and USC, Texas, Florida, etc. in the Champions Leauge - where the resources are far more balanced and the playoff structure of the competition a little more varied.

Playoff structure? You're using the wrong example...

I was going to mention that...granted the Premiership plays a giant fixture so all the schedules are balanced but there is no playoffs at the end of the season...at least not within the premiership.

Aston Villa is a great team to follow. They are having a great start so far, although last year they did the same and then fell apart due to lack of depth. Hopefully this year they are deeper, especially across the back line; appears Dunne's arrival was a bigger move than many thought at the time.

If you get Setanta, or can go someplace that does, the Villains have 2 big games coming up that will be televised in the US.

If you have AVFC questions and can't find the answer easily let me know, I know someone that might be of assistance.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Back to back posts - sorry.

I see Wolves beat Burnley. I didn't see it discussed on here regarding Wolves decision to play 10 B players against Man U so the starters would be fresh against Burnley (who also will fight to keep from being relegated).

Article was on SI.com

Interesting sporting ethical dilema...I understand what they did, just not sure I can agree with it.

I've never settled on a team in England that I would like to follow as "my" team. For whatever reason, Villa seems like a very good team to go with. Come to think of it, a lot of the Midlands teams are pretty likeable (outside of Birmingham City).

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

So I turned on ESPN2 a few minutes ago for the EPL game today, and I am getting treated to First and 10. This is why I don't watch ESPN if it isn't live sports. Stop yelling at me, Skip Bayless.

EDIT: and the game is rained out anyways. Sweet.
