World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Costa Ricans are very friendly, but as fans, not so much. Given the nice reception we had in Honduras, I'm glad to have helped them into the last guaranteed spot.

It was nice to see the Tico coaching staff get booted. I'm not sure what they were arguing about, all I could see from the other side of the field was the commotion - but I'll thank them for the extra minute of stoppage time. Worked out well for us.

ESPNSoccernet had quoted the Tico head coach as saying that the refs were not calling enough fouls during the second half. I think the actual quote was "you never blow your whistle" or something like that.

Kind of funny, when you consider that the Ticos were doing their best Mexico impression last night.

I thought they were arguing about a substitution. The substitution card (which makes it final) had been handed to the 4th official. A CRC player then started writhing on the ground (of course), and I think they changed their mind about the sub. The sub being final, they couldn't rescind it, leading to an argument.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

We also need more Torres. He brought something to the attack that Feilhaber just didn't provide. He settled the ball and switched the point of attack with ease.

I don't know about needing more Torres, but we definitely will need more Ricardo Clark next summer. In my eyes it wasn't a coincidence that Feilhaber played 70 minutes and we didn't score, then he comes out and we score twice in twenty-five minutes.

We simply are not very deep in the midfield. If we can get lucky and have Donovon, Bradley, Clark and Dempsey all healthy at the same time next June, we just might be in some games.

Also, one other positive is the realization that Connor Casey isn't the second coming of Brian McBride. Better now than around June 14, 2010 or so.

I agree. Unfortunately, if we can't have Altidore and Davies teamed up next summer, Casey may be our best option although if Davies can't play I wonder if we'd be better off with some sort of 4-5-1 or 5-4-1 formation. I know switching at this point sounds crazy, but I believe that Davies is the straw that's stirring the drink right now and without him we'd be in serious trouble.

Overall, I like our chances of getting out of the group stage if we can field our best players, but we are so thin that three and out is a strong possibility if anyone is hurt. I think FIFA seeding sixteen teams would be a dream for us.

I'm glad Honduras made it. With Suazo, Palacios, Pavon and Guevara playing, they are just fun to watch. Also, as far as CONCACAF is concerned, I like Costa Rica's chances against Uruguay. I know it would never happen, but they should play their home leg in California. That would have the Uruguains heads spinning.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

How do they decide who hosts the first CONMEBOL-CONCACAF game?

I don't think this got answered. It's a home-and-home series. Costa Rica hosts November 14th and then they play the return in Uruguay on the 18th. I always think it's an advantage to play at home second.

And answering the question AMC asked, it was drawn randomly.

I think it's hasty to draw conclusions from this, as we very easily could have had three or four goals while Benny was still playing.

Still... I don't think the Bradley-Benny pairing is working all that well.

It was about the sub, but the Tico's coach was already angry about the "lack of calls", so that's what probably caused him to go nuts.

The irony is that if their coach would have just kept quiet, the referee would have probably only added two minutes and he'd be wishing Honduras luck against Uruguay right now.

Also, I read Adriano Galliani, the AC Milan boss, wants compensation from the USSF. Hello Adriano! Maybe if you guys hadn't sat him on the bench for two months he wouldn't of got hurt jumping into the air. And your team couldn't have a worse record even if you'd played him, so there. ;)

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Why should they? Were they negligent in some way?

Also, don't teams usually take out insurance policies on players for exactly this kind of thing?

Because that's the way it needs to be. National teams don't get to borrow players from clubs and then returned them injured.

Here's the deal. If you decide to play for your national team and get injured playing for them, you either need to agree to not collect your salary while injured or the federation should pay the salary back to the club.

The clubs want compensation and they deserve it. Some clubs feel they deserve the salaries to be paid plus extra compensation to sign a replacement. That's absurd.

But its just as absurd to ask a club to pay the salary of a player while he's injured playing of his own volition for his club.

National federations make millions upon millions of dollars in profits. They have more than enough to pay the salary of club players hurt while on international duty.

So, (since this match was in DC) if Gooch went home to Olney, MD and wanted to kick around with the high school soccer team and tears up his knee that way, should the high school pay AC Milan?

That would probably be a violation of his contract.

You're ignoring a very important part of the explanation. I don't know if you're doing it intentionally to pretend to be obtuse or really don't see the difference.

The USSF profits greatly from using club players. Kicking the ball around at his old HS does not equate playing for your national team.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Probably. But playing for the National team isn't. I don't see much for where the club has any legal recourse, barring negligent behavior on the part of USSF.

Seriously, did they not have insurance on Gooch?

They don't have a legal recourse because the national teams have bullied the club teams and FIFA has always been country before club.

There should be a legal recourse. This is like someone borrowing your possession and then returning it broken, then refusing to pay for it. But because the law is created BY the people who like to borrow your possessions, they refuse you due compensation.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Meh, Caveat Emptor. Milan knew Gooch would be unavailable for several stints with the national team and brought him in anyway. If you don't want the risk, put together a team from guys who rarely play for their national squads.

I could see forcing compensation from friendly competitions, but for the World Cup, WCQ, and Gold Cup/Euros/Copa America etc., thems the breaks.

The response could easily be Gooch knew that he was being paid by Milan, but chose to play for the USA anyways: and should sacrifice his salary for being hurt not playing for his club.

He could have asked to not be called up. :D

Clubs pay the salary of players: they should have the right to decide whether or not their players can play in internationals and if they do allow the players to play then the federations should pay the salaries if they get hurt.
