Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Question: Could the scoring play have been ruled offsides on the first attempt to get the ball to Iniesta? The defender stepped in and intercepted the ball but could it be argued that it was played to an offsides player and the interception doesn't make the play onsides? The offsides player doesn't have to touch the ball, just be 'in the play', correct? I have to go watch it again tonight, just going from memory.

Not trying to say it should have been that way, just asking.

In my opinion, the ball was cut out too early to say that Iniesta had involved himself in the play. I rather suspect that the same play would have been made regardless of his presence there, as that sort of ball is dangerous and there's likely to be someone lurking toward the back post.

Not a good move for Mini-Bob. Blackpool is bound to make Derby County's effort in 2008-09 look competent.

I honestly hope Blackpool isn't just going to to go through the motions. I hope they aren't going to do the one and done so they can get the cash.

It would also be a pretty big culture shock I'd think. Ian Holloway is pretty much the anti-Bob in every way.

I watched it again last night and the best I can say is that if the flag went up as the ball was flying to Iniesta (the first time) I wouldn't have said that was completely wrong. The defender and goalie had to be aware of him and the ball was played toward him, albeit short.

We've all seen and, for the most part, understand that the human factor and judgment are part of the game so I have no real problem...it was more of a case of me wanting to check with others who watch a lot of soccer.

So, thin-slicing it, I thought I saw an offsides play; the accuracy of the pass and the defender intercepting were interesting variables. Just checking to see if others saw what I thought I saw and how everybody else processed the other factors.

I will tear up my appeal to FIFA to replay the game;)

And with a hat tip to SNY's Ted Berg, the New York Times reports on a University of Pennsylvania study on referee bias:
Fans who angrily questioned several calls made by soccer referees in this year’s World Cup won’t be surprised at a report in the journal PLoS One that found inherent bias in referees.

They might, however, be surprised that the bias is perceptual. The study found that soccer experts whose languages read left to right call more fouls when the action moves in the opposite direction, or right to left.

MLS All-Star Starting XI to face some team from Trafford on July 28

Ricketts, Chad Marshall, Omar Gonzalez, Olave, De Rosario, Schelotto, Beckerman, Morales, Pappa, Buddle, Donovan

Subs to be named later.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Wouldn't left-to-right bias even out over the course of a game as teams change ends at each half?
I would think it would even out due to the ref always changing position throughout the game where both teams get the "benefit" in both halves...

It's more going to end up being a bias toward action either toward or away from the center circle (either pro-offense or pro-defense), as the referee runs a diagonal during the game and sees each half of the field from roughly the same perspective.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Now that the World Cup is over. I can go back to bashing City for all of their money getting them a lousy Europa League spot and making fun of Liverpool for being a club that only has past glory. I can also rip on Chelsea being run by a Russian mobster and Arsenal young players finding a way to implode when the heat is on.

I love being a United fan. :D

I've enjoyed being the dominant team since the Prem began. Thank you very much.

That Forlan guy had a pretty good World Cup...didn't he play for you guys?

/See you in the third round of the FA Cup...

Some people don't work in certain places. I'll admit that Forlan and United didn't work. I won't bash him like some United fans do. He's a good player still.

As for the FA Cup, we have plenty of those too. :D

Congrats, you picked a team an ocean away that's been good your entire life. I love punks like you, talking trash about accomplishments you have no part of.

Sweet.

Despite it all, Liverpool has more European Cups (and has come very close to two more Cups) and has as many top league titles.
