World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I think that if anything maybe he needed to hand out more cards: Iniesta had an insane dive in the game, he should have been booked for simulation. Then he raised his hand and pushed Van Bommel who comically took a page out of the Spanish book and went down. He watched it happen, its either a yellow on Iniesta for the push, Van Bommel for the dive, or book both of them!

The Dutch were thuggish, the Spanish divers.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

My allusions to basketball and lacrosse were hyperbole just to help illustrate my point.

My fear isn't that the offense would keep control of the ball deep in the zone. That would be just fine - my fear is really exactly the opposite. As you say, it is more difficult to possess a soccer ball, so the offense will turn it over a bunch. The problem is that once the defenders get the ball, they won't be able to do anything with it except lob it upfield and hope that the lone attacker remaining upfield miraculously comes up with the ball. Most of the time, though, the offense would just get the ball back and quickly work it back upfield, so the game becomes a series of predictable passes upfield into a clogged defense followed by a desperate lob back out to the half line. Rinse and repeat.

It would wreck the transition flow from defense to midfield to offense, which is one of the things that I love about soccer - all of the play, all over the field can be just as beautiful and as intricate as the goal scoring.

You make excellent points, and certainly trading a potentially clogged midfield for a similarly clogged defense would be bad.

My wish list for a future FIFA game is to extend Manager Mode to being able to take the reigns of a national team like you can in Football Manager. I'd love the ability to take control of a national team for two "World Championship" cycles (obviously it wouldn't have the World Cup license) - watch for club results and promising young players, make call-ups, schedule friendlies, and participate in a youth tournament, your continental championship, WC qualifying, and ultimately the WC itself.

That would be cool.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I think Webb's only alternative was to go heavier with the cards early to try to stamp his authority on the game. Anybody who was paying attention knew that the Dutch were going to play a hard game against Spain to try to disrupt their ball possession and passing, with De Jong and Van Bommel particularly likely to make questionable challenges, and that's exactly what we saw (a bunch of caution-worthy message-sending types of tackles that rightfully drew cautions). And I think Webb was reticent to be freer with cards early to avoid backing himself into a corner, or sending someone off early and provoking a firestorm from the fans. On the other hand, he really had to issue the cards he did because if he hadn't, the game would certainly have fallen apart. As it was, the cautions did force the Dutch to cut out the unsporting challenges to avoid getting sent off, so they were effective.

All things considered, I have few complaints about how he reffed the game. I figured beforehand that it was going to be a nightmare to handle based on the Netherlands' history, and that proved to be the case.

In the abstract, it's fine to say that it's not necessary to show a lot of cards, but in exceptional circumstances the players won't respond to anything else.

Which is what I attempted to say in the post at 11:41 central. I missed most of the first half, so I was basing my view on the cards (or lack of cards) in the second half.

I think he should have sent off DeJong after kicking the guy in the chest. It would have sent a clear(er) message. Would it have affected the game? **** straight (and deservedly so).

I don't recall the ref's exact positioning on the De Jong play, but I think the Spanish player's back was to the ref. I know when I saw it in real time, I just thought it was a high kick going for the ball rather than a boot to the chest - it wasn't until seeing the replay that you understood the severity of it.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Yeah on replay it was obvious but the initial angle just made you think it was a high boot. Yellow card, sure.

Then you see the replay and go what the heck.

Right, I figured that's what happened. I only saw the one replay this morning. Pretty brutal.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Boring nature of the tournament?

This tournament was great.

This tournament was boring. There were a few close games, but the soccer was boring. There was a total lack of creativity by anyone. Very few of the midfielders converted through balls. Hardly anyone could create space. The tournament frankly reminded me of watching MLS games. Not a lot of flow, skill displayed or attacking in the middle third of the field. The Germans, Forlan and Tevez were a few of the exceptions.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I still think his first Yellow to Heitinga was a bad decision, if for no other reason than the way he decided to hand it out...only after the spanish player appeared hurt.

If I remember right, Heitinga also went down on that challenge. The delay was because Webb was waiting for him to get up before he showed him the caution. Refs don't like to show the card while a player is down injured. Also, I believe it's typically Webb's style to say a few words to a player before he pulls the card out.

Well, then I'd argue you're talking about the boring nature of play in the tournament.

The tournament itself and the excitement derived from it, of course, involves a lot more than the actual quality of play.

The US-England game, for example, wasn't much to watch from a technical standpoint - but it was tense, dramatic, and exciting for so many other reasons.

I agree, that would be cool.

Okay, I understand what you mean by excitement. Tense, dramatic; that's exciting soccer. Boring to watch, but exciting. I'll give you that.

I actually get bored with soccer rather quickly if there isn't some high quality play. I haven't seen more than 10 minutes of a Liverpool game in years. I just can't keep the old eyelids up.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Don't think I saw this mentioned upthread; Forlan won the Golden Ball and Muller won the Best Young Player.

Edit to add, and taken from another board:

Villa: 5 goals
Iniesta: 2 goals
Puyol: 1 goal

Congratulations to FC Barcelona for winning the World Cup! :D

I think the part I bolded covers soccer alot of times. It really isn't that great to watch without context. I thought the first half of the title game was god awful and boring...probably because I didn't really care who won and there was no flow and very few chances. I managed to take a late lunch to watch Germany vs Spain semifinal and only caught the first half. That was very boring too. There have been other games that even though the score line was similar (0-0 for most or all of the match) where I enjoyed it more because there was more flow, more chances and more exciting moments. The only exciting moments in the final to me were Robben's missed opportunities.

Six of the eleven starters for Spain played on last season's Barça team (Puyol, Piqué, Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta, Pedro).

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Because if there's a country that has any right to throw around the term "Nazi" to insult Germany... it's Argentina?

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Yep. I had the procedure wrong though.
You select 2010 FIFA World Cup as game mode. On the next screen, scroll down and change fixture type from "real" to "custom". Then on the next screen, press triangle to replace teams. Done.

Why couldn't we get rid of France in that manner? (And I'm not making a reference to the incident. I'd love to put Scotland in their place.) :D

EDIT: Road to the World Cup 98 was THE game for qualifying. I tried qualifying as Suriname that year. (Didn't work out too well, though.)

Seven will play on NEXT season's Barca team. :D

(Maybe they should sign Capdevila just for good measure; he's from Catalunya too.)
