World Cup Day 1 - Brazil Waxes Croatia?

Re: World Cup Day 1 - Brazil Waxes Croatia?

Uh, I don't see how Fred could force himself backwards on that play. #6 clearly grabs his shoulder with his left hand and watch Fred's right foot bend as a result. Watch the replay shown from behind and to the left without listening to Ian Darke get it wrong and you'll see it. I'm no fan of those flippers but that doesn't look like a bad call to me.

I accept the fact that the left hand on the shoulder is why the penalty was called but it still looks like Fred falls way too easily because he realizes the situation and is hoping to get the call.

This is my thinking as well. There is a grab and Fred was affected by it. It's about 50/50 IMO.

What I'm really not liking is all of the "he wasn't qualified to ref this game because he's from Japan. They need more Euro referees!"

Horrible call. I was in the stadium and the Brasileiros were literally giggling at what they knew was a sham call. Don't think it would have ultimately affected the outcome, but it was, at best, highly questionable.

Honestly felt bad for the Croats. They were far from tentative - was nice to see their early aggression, even if they packed the box a bit once Neymar leveled it at 1.

Corinthians have a beautiful stadium now. Beer ran out an hour before the match started, but they restocked from somewhere by about mid first half.

On to Natal for me.

Weak goalkeeping on both sides today I thought. Brazil certainly got lucky, but it's not like they didn't show they were the better team. Refs gave Brazil the PK goal, but I don't think they cost Croatia the equalizer... that one only ended up going in the net after some other players had heard the whistle and stopped play. Julio Caesar could be an Achilles heel for Brazil. David Luiz was absolutely filthy good though.

Excellent summation. DL made up for a horrible match from Marcelo (even setting the own goal aside). Very worried about Julio Cesar, but ****, he still shone a hell of a lot brighter than the Croat keeper.

i've been saying this for years but penalties are given way too easily. you simply can't give a penalty for that today. absolutely brutal.

and hulk might not be 6 feet but he is built like a tank. a bowling ball with legs.

It's funny, too. The keeper had the player read like a book. Just didn't get enough hand on it. Happened to me this past Sunday. The guy totally gave away where he was going to shoot it and I got it, but not enough to make a save...

If thats Tim Howard or some other top flight goaltender, Brazil likely doesn't score any of those goals...very poor goaltending.

Yeah, just think about how much that would have shaken the soccer world if Brazil had lost its opener.
