World Championships: U18 and Women’s

Thread for the U18 and Women’s worlds. Lots of talk on the Wisco thread about the u18 tourney.

First up is the U18s tourney which takes place in Madison next week, after the 2021 tourney was cancelled and the 2022 was delayed. USA Hockey took over as host shortly after most recent cancellation.

I’ll start with the senior team.
Hayley Scamurra is someone who seems to have benefited from having a non women’s hockey person arrive on the scene. She broke through in the Corkum era, post college, a rarity. Harmon is another one. Who will be the players that see an outsider coming in and maybe get a shot? My prediction is Frankel will be on the 2022 worlds roster and actually play a game. Beyond that, not sure.

Worlds are in August. The roster is described as aging in an AP report yesterday. More interesting you have players start to be looking elsewhere for income. Decker took on a job, Kessel took an internship. Knight on espn. They are coming off two second place finishes in IIHF tourneys. They don’t really “ blow things up” in women’s hockey at the national level so I expect we’ll see the usual amount of turnover but nothing shocking.

The kiss of death imo for the US at the Olympics was injuries (Zumwinkle was hurt apparently plus Decker)+ fear of using a fourth line meant they gave themselves no real chance. They showed glimpses of being that scary freight train but never really got up to speed. Can’t control injuries, but need to have faith in whoever they put on the roster. The new coach is apparently talented hockey wise so we’ll see what he can do. I doubt this coach will be around by the next Olympics.

I am truly excited to eye test these players next week and try to be more of a scout than a fan. I am rooting for USA of course, but I want to just take down the players numbers who stand out and hope I see a lot of Badgers on the list or players who are playing out east for college. I won't be able to get to all the games like I wanted to due to work being insane now and I'm going on vacation the following week, but I can get to the 2 late games early in the week for sure. Of course if I spend less time here I get more work done. I'm sure there are some fellow posters who would like this to become a reality HAHA.

Are any fellow posters planning on attending the games?

Timothy that sounds like so much fun....summer hockey and then vacation. What could be better.

I hope there is a stream for the finals. I’m interested in the games where Canada and US play each other. Canada is showing a bunch of games on TSN, crossing my fingers there’s an option in the US.

I'll be at the Monday and Tuesday games in my usual seat (Section 10, Row 9, seats 3 and 4--I don't care about being anonymous!). I can't go the games later in the week. I hope some of our current Badgers are there to cheer on their future teammates.

I intend to be at LaBahn for pretty much the whole thing. Unless twelve games in eight days proves to be too much.

I saw a tweet (or instagram) from Sarah Nurse that at least implied she was planning on being in Madison for the U18s (cheering for Canada, of course). I assume others will be as well.

Wow, this is great, from USA Hockey: Affordable streaming option! :)

“NHL Network, including through collaboration with ESPN+, is provide ground-breaking coverage of the tournament in the U.S. All U.S. games in the preliminary round will air live on ESPN+ with NHL Network airing the games the next day at 12 p.m. ET. Broadcast coverage of the playoff round, including quarterfinals, semifinals and medal-round game, will be announced at a later date, but all games will either be aired live on NHL Network or ESPN+.

Looks like the US/Canada preliminary day is almost sold out. Lots of tickets available for the preliminary games Monday & Tuesday.

Last tournament results were: USA gold, Canada silver, Russia bronze. Russia has since been expelled, Sweden back in group A and Germany added to the tourney in Group B, their second ever appearance.

One period in Canada vs Finland, and while the level of play is good, it feels to me like 'what if Wisconsin and Minn had JV teams?'. I guess that's to be expected, and could be a consequence of limited time for the teams playing together. But the last time I was in LaBahn it was WCHA playoffs vs Mankato, and both of these teams would have their hands full with that Mankato team, and then some.

Still, this is fun. And a decent crowd for the early game, and with no US playing yet.

Canada’s games are streaming too on espn plus. I didn’t realize that. This is so nice. 2-0 Finland late in the third.

Finnish goalie was the difference. Canadian goalie was also quite good; one seeing eye puck through multiple screens, and a 5-on-3 the Finns converted. Otherwise pretty even.

Not over the impressed with Canada.. Kind of reminded me of a WI team where they get a lot of shots but the goalie was always squared up to them.
