Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

Re: Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

Harvard is 2-0 against Clarkson, whom the computers like more than anyone that Mercyhurst has played. The OSU and BSU question is an interesting one. My guess is that the whooping that UND put on the Buckeyes is hurting them with the voters. UMD is the WCHA team that is being overvalued, but I'm sure they have a lot of street credibility based on seasons gone by.

Not sure I agree with you on UMD, pretty tough schedule with wins against alot of top teams. My point on H is that their schedule isn't very tough to date either, let's see how they do against Minny.

I agree 100% that the series at UND is killing our Buckeyes in the polls. We swept Bemidji last month (five points ... Friday game was won in a shootout) and now they are the ones in the 'receiving votes' section and we are nowhere to be found. We really need to at least split with UMD this weekend to get back some respect in the polls.

I'd guess that the voters ignore the shootout, so the BSU series is likely viewed as a Buckeye win and a tie. So what hurts OSU compared to the Beavers is that win over them is your best result, while they have the wins over UM and UMD. It evens out a bit more in the coming weeks when you play the teams that they've seen (UMD, UM), and BSU sees your opponents (UND, UW). It makes the comparison a bit more apples-to-apples. Or you could sweep the Bulldogs and start getting the votes that had been going to them.

Re: Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

Looks like Harvard may be dropping our of the top 10, I am assuming they will drop two to Minny.
I'll wait until after the weekends games are over before speculating where they may wind up. But based on the Dartmouth game, you appear to be more correct than I.

Re: Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

Ohio State defeated UMD 4-1 earlier tonight. The Buckeyes spotted the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead on a first period power play goal, then scored four unanswered goals for the win. Maybe this will get us some respect in the polls.

BSU getting some Love. Is that a first for them ?

When the Beavers were tied for #10 after knocking off Minnesota, they said that was their first ever ranking in the top 10. Then they lost to MSU and dropped out, so I expect that this is their highest ranking ever, and only the second in the top 10.

Interesting that BU falls 2 spots due to losses to #3 Cornell, and Harvard falls out of the top 10 following losses to #2 Minny, yet BC loses to unranked Q (granted in OT) and loses no ground and UND gains a spot after a convincing lose to OSU. I offer no suggestions for change, just an observation.

I find it funny that the polls are still hammering our Buckeyes over a series from October (vs North Dakota). We're 8th in the pairwise rankings but we can't crack the top ten in the other polls. Go figure.

The other factor is that people tend to vote for teams that they've seen. There are more eastern voters than western voters, and most of those eastern voters haven't seen you. So they may think that they have to vote for some WCHA teams, but they also have a few teams from close to home that impressed them. They vote for those teams first, and then fill out their ballot with teams that come to mind. Apparently, both BSU and UMD come to their minds before OSU.

Also, the computer rankings are all about what has already happened. Polls include an element of what the voter expects will happen as the season unfolds. Voters are expecting UMD and BU to improve on their results to date, because they've had success in prior seasons.

Movements do make some sense:

Code:
4	Boston College 10-4-1	99	4 - Lost in OT, Won other 2 games
5	North Dakota 10-5-1	80	6 - Split with New No 8 team
6	Mercyhurst 10-2-0	77	7 - Swept a non-ranked team
7	Boston University 9-6-1	66	5 - Lost twice

UND and MC both gain one spot, cause BU dropped two spots. BU lost twice, including big once, and UND split, hence UND takes the spot previously occupied by BU. MC moves ahead of BU as well courtesy their two wins over a non-ranked team. Since BC was ahead of both BU and UND, BU lost twice, UND split, while BC lost once, but also won twice, BC stays where they were, as no one behind them did enough to catapult ahead of them.

Both BSU and TheOHIO are starting to get some love.

Always seemed to me the effect of results, especially extreme results are with a team for the duration of the season, to some extent. OSU would probably need a larger number of results in the win column against higher ranked teams to significantly diminish the affect of those early UND results. A 2nd W vs. UMD, a sweep of BSU, more convincing wins in Mankato and a split with UW all would provide a big boost. Any combination thereof would help some to diminish the UND results impact I would think. Anything less than a sweep this weekend will not help their / your cause per ranking...I don't think.

This assumes that all losses and wins should be condisered equally. I guess my point would be that BU according to the pollsters should lose to Cornell where as BC should have gone 3-0 not 2-1 against the unranked teams they played. I think what is shows quite frankly is a high level of ignorance by the pollsters overall as well as the bias mentioned in another post. Which over time consistantly rewards teams that schedule weaker competition.

I think you're right on that because we've gotten nothing from the polls since that debacle in North Dakota. As for BSU we picked up five of the six points from them, winning the first game in a shootout. We probably should have finished them off in regulation, I guess, but I will take five points against BSU anyday. I would liked to have seen us sweep UMD last weekend. As for UW, we played them very tough. I would liked to have seen what we could have done against them with Natalie Spooner on the ice (instead of at the 4 Nations Cup). Not using that as an excuse, just stating a fact. As for this weekend, I think our team realizes they need to sweep unranked teams at home, which we have done this season. We have not lost to an unranked team this season (five losses are to UMD, Wisconsin, North Dakota).

I'm just saying that a sweep of Bemidji would likely have had a marked positive impact on OSU ranking, both mathematically and in the minds of pollsters...especially with the amount of rankings attention the Beavers are getting based on their results. Five of possible six is a good result against the Beavers...and maybe the Buckeyes aren't getting credit they deserve for those results with pollsters. A nit pick for sure, but a shootout win isn't winning the game technically and I suspect a shootout win has a slightly decreased positive ranking influence with human pollsters vs. an outright win in regulation or OT. I'm not a mathematical ranking formula guru by any stretch so I don't know if there's a discrepancy in shootout W value between Rutter and human pollsters...but I suspect a poll voter might give relatively low positive value to the shootout winner when contemplating their vote.

The respective positions for BSU and OSU in Rutter rankings would be supported by that (narrow sample) five of six possible result I guess.

Re: Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

To tie is like kissing your sister; this is why games have to be decided eventually. Any game with a major significance (as in a playoff game) must have a winner. Should we have two winners? To win in overtime or a shootout means you have handled the added pressure to succeed. To put it all on the shoulders of certain individuals takes away from the team aspect, but having said that, everybody can't be on the ice at the same time can they? Winning in a shootout should have the same effect. As long as you win, no matter who you play, maintains the integrity and respect for all teams in your league.

Re: Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

Personally I like the shootout and I wish they were still doing it in Hockey East for the women...assuming they could get the points correct this time around. But I think for now in the national polls you would have to look at WCHA shootout wins/losses as just plain ties since that is what the NCAA selection committee will do come voting time...if I am not mistaken.

;)

If a conference chooses to have shootouts then points distribution that makes sense is key. Glad the WCHA made the tweak to make awarded pts. logical. I've also come to enjoy watching the shootout when / if game isn't decided with OT.
