Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

Any thoughts on what a 2012-2013 pre-season poll should look like?

I think NU, BC and No Dak gotta get some respect...along with a few of the usual suspects. BU, St. Lawrence...Cornell? I'm not really up to speed on what these teams lost to graduation but their '11-'12 seasons and recruits have me thinking they'll be top 10 again. Others?

Expect the ECAC to be more of a horse race this year. On paper Cornell still the team to beat, but watch out for Clarkson. They are bringing in a strong class, so expect them to be better. Expect Harvard, Dartmouth, SLU and Quinny to be the other strong contenders.

Fully agree.

Re: Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

I did think of mentioning Quinni after doing very brief research. I think they had 19 wins overall in 2011-2012...with what appears to be a nice freshman class coming in. A fair chance at 20+ wins in 2012-2013? If so I'd expect to see them top 10 at some point.

Yes...Clarkson too...interesting early, and fairly challenging NC schedule for them.

Re: Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

People mention Dartmouth, a team that had 3 players eclipse 25 points, two of whom graduated. How does the recruiting class for the Big Green look, given they will need to find some offense?

Stacey should be the real deal. Big with good speed. Played for the Toronto Jr. Aeros, Team Ontario and the Canadian U-18. Definitely a big a pick up for the Big Green as I know she was recruited by Wisconsin, Cornell and probably just about everyone else. Two of Stacey's teammates from the Aeros and Team Ontario, Allen and Forfar, should also be very solid addtions for Dartmouth.

Agree. Would expect an immediate impact from Stacey. She has got both the size and the speed, and the potential to be a dominant force. Big Green still have Dumais, who was one of the strong players up front the last few years. Dartmouth and Clarkson are both bringing in strong new comers. Clarkson landed the top D from Canuck land, and Dart mouth a top forward.

I think Cornell lost more quality to graduation than any other team in the ECAC, with RJ, Karpenko, White and Mazotta all gone. Having said that, they still have a great 1-2 punch up front with BJ and Saulnier, and solid D with Rougeau, Fortino and newcomer Poudrier.

Already looking forward to the season. First road trip in Mid October. :)

Re: Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

Dartmouth should definitely be in the mix of top teams as they a strong nucleus coming back and a strong incoming class. Both Fischer and
Hobeika will be back as they have another year of eligibility.:)

Excellent.

Hmm..Wondering why you are so anxious to see them this year. ;)

I don't think there was much suspense as to which team would be ranked No. 1 in the pre-season poll. When was the last time the defending national champs did NOT start off the year atop the polls?

I don't remember if UMD was ranked #1 in the fall of 2010, but Wisconsin was not at the top after losing much of their team prior to the 2009-10 season (Vetter, Lawler, Keesely, Knight, Duggan, Johnson, etc.) Not sure if they'd already played at this date, but the poll doesn't indicate that they had.

Honestly...with the losses and such a drastically changed team I don't know that I'd put them at #1 myself...but yeah...I think the whole thing is largely automatic based on the final for 2011-2012...as is the norm for previous season to the pre-season. It would surely be extremely difficult to attempt to quantify each teams pre-season ranking weighing losses to graduation and incoming classes. If I could do that I might have to agree with Northockey where UND is concerned. I would, and do agree BC belongs in the top 4.

I went back and looked, and found that in the NCAA era there was one more instance where the reigning national champ was not ranked No. 1 in USCHO's poll to start the following season. That was Minnesota who won it in 2005 but they had Wisconsin ranked on top on the 10/3/05 pre-season poll for 2005-06. That turned out to be a good call as Wisconsin did win it in '06, their first title.

Also interesting that NONE of the teams who've been ranked No. 1 in the pre-season poll have gone on to win it in the Spring for five consecutive years now (hopefully Minnesota can break that string come April!). Prior to that the pollsters were more accurate: in the pre-season they picked the eventual champs in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007 (5 of 7). So all total from 2001 to 2012 they are 5 for 12.
