Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

Re: Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

I still see a strong case for UMD to make the NCAA's. Im not a fan of the bulldogs, coach, "tradition", etc. but I believe there should be 4/7 teams WCHA
And the Gophers should have made the field for the 2001 tournament. Didn't happen despite winning the conference regular season title. Five words: win the conference tournament title.

To quote the title of my new favorite ESPN2 show, Numbers Never Lie.

Re: Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

Brooky- UMD could have all your favorite MN girls you so closely, the coach you revere the most, and a flawless record... and you still would come up with some reason to hate them.
Actually, if read without the ever present "rational" contempt, my post would be clearly and correctly interpreted for it's objectively expressed factual content. I didn't make the numbers up. Is the truth painful?

Won't matter if UMD wins the conference tournament...or even if the pieces fall into place before then.

Yes. Your comments are 100% based on fact and are void of emotion at all times. Yes.

Re: Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

Forgetting any personal dislikes for the minute and going just by the numbers ... UMD currently sits on the wrong side of a tie for ninth in the PWR (Northeastern holds the advantage in RPI, which is the tiebreaker.) For UMD to climb up into the top eight in the PWR, my guess is that it will need to win five of its final six versus OSU, at Bemidji, and versus MSU. Bemidji is playing well and they are a tough team to sweep at home, so I think the Bulldogs need to take care of their home ice. Yes, they can win the WCHA tournament, but I imagine they'd prefer that they weren't in a win-or-go-home situation for the WCHA Final Face-Off.

I was referencing the one specific post you addressed with your "rational" well reasoned  observation. The information within that post is 100% factual. Your sarcasm should not obscure the reality that I do loath the UMD Bulldogs. One minor oversight in your post numbered 100 in this thread, the use of "them" fails to specify my additional distaste for all but a very few UMD fans as well.

As several, if not all UMD fans that participate in this forum have routinely expressed identical sentiments for the Minnesota Gophers, what exactly is your difficulty with understanding or accepting my position regarding the Mutts? Since you're completely comfortable with the bitterly contemptuous Gopher sentiments of Mutt fans. Are we on a two way street or one way street?

Seems like they got this one right! As a ND fan, I didn't think they would rise this much this year.

Re: Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

Ridiculous that Maine doesn't receive any votes but Providence does.......and BU at #10 even though Maine has a better record and took 2 of 3 from them.

Hopefully, they'll use this as motivation for a very tough series at Northeastern.

Agreed that one Providence vote is ridiculous, probably just a Hockey East coach who wants to either prop up the team from having beaten them or lost to them. I don't think Deraney would be shameless enough to vote his team 10th with a losing record.

That I'm fine with. Look, BU, Maine, and BC have all gone 3-3 head-to-head -- that's all a wash. It comes down to how teams have performed in other games. BU has also beaten North Dakota, Harvard, and Northeastern. Who's Maine's best win against other than BU and BC? Quinnipiac? In addition, Maine also drew Brown twice and Union once, and these are all teams they need wins against to be a top 10 team. BU's worst results were against UConn and Providence, but they did no worse than Maine against these teams. BU's record is worse mainly because they played Cornell and Wisconsin twice each and lost them all.

Granted, BU is a tough team to rank because they're better than the No. 10 with Philip-Poulin and worse without. No. 10 rank seems just about right, and it's clear the voters are very divided on how to rank BU, and that's fine.

Providence did beat. Sorry they lost to Vemont and Brown? ridiculous

Re: Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

The above quote has great zing to it, but it's probably a better idea to be accurate.... how is YOUR college/university doing as compared with Harvard in the so-called "big-time" sports? How many of the 30 starting NFL quarterbacks graduated from YOUR college? (Ryan Fitzpatrick graduated from Harvard). How's YOUR college doing in the ESPN men's basketball poll? (Harvard is #23).

As “pithy and accurate” does not appear to be forthcoming as a revised characterization of my earlier post, I will respond, my dear Dr. Watson, to the remainder of your vitriol. Not that it’s relevant, but, since you asked, my alma mater: has won 28 college national championships in football, more than any other school; has garnered 28 Ivy League titles in basketball, which is 27 more than Harvard, if you give Harvard credit for its first last year as co-champion when it lost the NCAA qualifying play-off game to the 28-time winner; and, perhaps most impressive of all, has earned the annual all-sports point award in the Ivy League for each of the last 25 years.

The quarterback ranks of the NFL today, which contain 32, not 30, starting QBs, include no graduates of my school. However, alumnus Jason Garrett, currently the head coach of the Cowboys, was a starter for nine games in Dallas during his playing days and does have a career passer rating above 80, not something to which Mr. Fitzpatrick can lay claim.

Closer to home ice, Mr. Hobey Baker and Ms. Patty Kazmaier, honorees for the top two individual trophies in college hockey, are fellow graduates. You’ll have to remind me who won last year’s Ryan Fitzpatrick Award.

Lastly, and most pointedly, my alma mater has placed first in the annual US News ranking of American universities in 10 of the past 12 years, which, yes, is more times on top than Harvard.

Those standings are out of whack, or grossly out of date. For starters, Harvard beat both Brown and Yale recently, and they also split with Dartmouth, so there is no way they are 1-4.

Out of whack, no. Out of date, yes. Those were the standings on Jan 24th, when they were posted. They are not the standings today. With the two wins you mention, plus a recent victory over Princeton, Harvard has vaulted to fourth place in the Ivy League:

GP Record
Cornell 8 7-1-0
Princeton 10 6-3-1
Dartmouth8 4-3-1
Harvard 8 4-4-0
Brown 7 2-5-0
Yale 7 0-7-0

All of this back and forth is very interesting and educational. I did actually learn a lot....but timing isn't your forte considering last Saturday's beating at The Bright. Just sayin'

Any thoughts on what a 2012-2013 pre-season poll should look like?

I think NU, BC and No Dak gotta get some respect...along with a few of the usual suspects. BU, St. Lawrence...Cornell? I'm not really up to speed on what these teams lost to graduation but their '11-'12 seasons and recruits have me thinking they'll be top 10 again. Others?

Re: Women's D1 Rankings/Polls 2011-2012

I've crunched the numbers and studied the trends, neither of which helped, so here's my best guess at the initial 2012-2013 rankings:

1. Minnesota
2. North Dakota
3. Boston College
4. Wisconsin
5. Northeastern
6. Cornell
7. Boston University
8. St. Lawrence
9. Harvard
10. Minnesota-Duluth

Let's play hockey!!!

I really don't know what to expect for the coming season other than all of those teams should be in the mix as will Mercyhurst I would expect ... and probably a few others.

Looking at last year’s Frozen Four teams, UMinn, Wisc and Cornell all had heavy losses to graduation, but still have solid returning cores and good recruiting classes. BC will remain the most intact, and has a strong recruiting class.

North Dakota returns its stars and adds a very nice freshmen class. Northeastern should also be very good, but the graduation of Schilling could expose some holes that were not previously apparent.

BU and SLU both have some big losses to graduation but solid returning cores. Harvard losses basically no one, and has a good freshman class coming in.

All of that to say, I really don't have a strong initial instinct for rankings to start the season. I’d put UMinn at the top. I'd also add PC, Dartmouth, QU and Clarkson as solid contenders for making the top ten at some point this year, though they probably won’t start there.
