WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

Yup. I just got an invitation to the press conference in my email.

Only rumor that I've heard is that it will shock the hockey world. No specifics. I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Invite specially says it's for the announcement of the new coach.

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

Candidates, rumored or confirmed, include:
http://www.mlive.com/broncos/index.ssf/2...its_n.html

WMU assistant coach Pat Ferschweiler, the former Western Michigan player who helped guide the Broncos last year to the CCHA title game and NCAA tournament.

U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18 coach Ron Rolston, who has tallied numerous medals in his six years of coaching the national program. He also has 12 years of college assistant coaching experience.

University of Nebraska-Omaha associate head coach Mike Hastings, who spent last season with the Mavericks and the season prior as an assistant at Minnesota. Before that, Hastings coached the USHL's Omaha Lancers for 14 seasons where he won three championships and became the winningest coach in USHL history with a record of 529-210-56. He was also an assistant coach for the U.S. National Junior Team in 2003 and '05.

Former NHL coach Andy Murray, who has a combined 10 years of head coaching experience with the Los Angeles Kings (99-06) and St. Louis Blues (06-10). Prior to that, Murray served as an assistant for the Philadelphia Flyers, Minnesota North Stars and Winnipeg Jets. He guided the AHL Hershey Bears to the league championship ('88), and has spent time coaching in Switzerland and throughout Canada at various levels, including college.

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

Maybe announce joining the NCHC too?

Nothing about that in the invite.

Text of the invitation follows with references as to location and contact removed:

"We are pleased to be announcing our new Head Hockey Coach at a Press
Conference in the XXXXXXX on Tuesday, July 26 at 12:00 noon. If you are
available we would enjoy having you be a part of welcoming them to WMU
and our Bronco Family.

Tomorrow morning they will begin advertising the press
conference through the famous Goldmen and teases tomorrow leading
everyone to wwwWOWWESTERN.com and a countdown Clock to the press
conference.

Thank you and look forward to seeing you there."

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

Rolston appears out.

Come on down Murray?
I think you're probably right.

That is huge news for Western Michigan. Gotta say, albeit maybe selfish of me to say but I hope the NCHC tries to get WMU to join. They've really been showing how much commitment they have for their hockey program.

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

I'll admit I don't know anything about Andy Murray.

His lack of American college experience (recruiting) and his age (60) are huge red flags to me.

Can anyone fill me in on Murray?

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

Brad Schlossman (@SchlossmanGF) tweeted: Expect Western Michigan to name Andy Murray as head coach tomorrow. And chn is now reporting the same...

Pro: Coached at the highest level in hockey, and wasn't awful at it (little over .500, not much postseason success), so he can coach and tell a kid what it will take to make the NHL. I believe our current assistants are signed through this coming season, and hopefully they can cover any recruiting shortfalls from a guy who has never coached college hockey.

Cons: Never coached college hockey before. 60 years old- after the NHL, is this just a relaxing pre-retirement gig?

I think you have good reason to be concerned. It's a big name but I'm not sure how he fits at college with his age. He did spend some time coaching Canadian National Hockey Team and Shattuck St Marys but other than that...I'm not sure why this is so great for Western.

Because a former NHL Head Coach "wants" to be the head coach at Western?

That will make them a perennial powerhouse. Obviously. Since NMU has only been mediocre while being guided by a former NHL Assistant Coach.
