WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

College hockey has changed in the last six years. Recruits are picking coaches first/schools second/arenas & facilities third. They all want to play in the NHL and coaches who have coached in the NHL are going to be very attractive to recruits and their families. With all the scouting services and publicity out there, its no secret who are the top 15 & 16 year-old hockey players.

Changed really? I think recruits have been picking those reasons all along. Most recruits also know if they're NHL caliber or not or on the edge. Others know they can play in Euro etc. So where does that leave all those recruits who DO make a difference but do not fit?

Pretty stupid question! Western was riding the high road with Blashill vis-a-vis the NCHC....now there will be an expectation of continuing along it...which will appeal to the new conference. See why you got your moniker....but kind of an insult to good, sweet manure...."crap" would be a better word!

Ah ha so you're saying that any college, no matter who, could up its appeal to the bhhc should they pay a lot of money for the coach.?
I guess Michigan Tech screwed up...we should have gone after Ken Hitchcock or John Tortorella...**** I wish we had thought of this sooner!

Absolutely, our facilities and footprint are exactly what the NCHC is looking for. Heck, Hitchcock could've been paid partially in porterhouses from the Pilgrim River Steakhouse. ;)

I digress - good luck with this hire, WMU.

sure. That's a given, but you kind of missed the point there Canada. DG was inferring that simply by hiring an expensive coach this would make a team more likely to be graced by the BHHc with an invitation. I just think that's not the case. it's a lot more than a good coach, if you really want a top program. But I agree with your post and I think it's a good hire for WMU.
And I also agree manure is sweet, I try not to disgrace it.

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

According to at least one article today, SCSU coach Bob Motzko was on the final list.

That probably would have been the ultimate dick move. "Hey guys, we're trying to get into this conference that your president openly hates and that eviscerated your conference. So we're just going to make you search for a new coach even later than our search."

That would have been a fun one to just sit back and watch while USCHO burns

There's nowhere near enough Western fans on this board for that. I'd be hearing **** from random St. Cloud people five years down the road and in completely unrelated threads. I'd have to hire the North Dakota and/or Denver people to my cause.

We're available. :)

probably salary leverage like Scott Sandelin going to Penn State.

Motzko is entering the third year of a six year deal and his salary can't go up much if at all since the state is basically broke and the school is facing a multi million dollar deficit.
If that's salary leverage, he couldn't have picked a worse time.

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

I was very impressed with Andy and I went to the press conference with many doubts. I now think that he will be a great addition and I, once again, feel excited about the coming season. Last year at this time I was very impressed with Jeff Blashil and I posted that Western would do much better than the polls predicted. Several people made fun of that but I got the last laugh. I predict a repeat.

Sweet reply, Manurespreader...I'll remember not to bandy words with you....we might even become friends in the garden so to speak ...while we're both spreading it!
