WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

It'll be okay fellas

WMU will hire a quality coach.

Just the way things are these days. Seems D1 hockey is about development and advancement of players and yes...coaches too!

Congrats to Coach Blashill!!!

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

Congrats to Coach Blashill on making a great career move and shame on WMU for not having a two or three year requirement in his contract. Even then, the AD could have waived that clause because the opportunity is so great. I'm sure the Red Wings either didn't know or didn't think about the very poor timing of this move for WMU. The available coaches is pretty well picked over, with the exception of Ron Rolston ( an probably a few others I haven't thought of).

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

I've heard 4th or 5th hand that we were already in the leftovers group because Miami said they didn't want us coming with them.

Needless to say, if true MAC meetings this fall might be more contentious then usual.

I doubt anyone knows for sure, but that seems incredibly silly for Miami to say that unless the travel budget is so robust that bussing to a few conference series doesn't mean anything. Regardless, I can't understand why we'd do that, but anything's possible I guess.

I think Miami assistant and WMU alum Brent Brekke will be your next coach.

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

It would be great to see the MAC give Miami of Ohio the boot, but I doubt it would ever happen.

As for your coach, I'd put my money on Rud.

The MAC give Miami the boot over a decision that impacts the MAC, how? The MAC doesn't sponsor hockey. Plus, the MAC ain't throwing out one of the conference's premier institutions -- both on and off the field.

Most likely if his contract is similar to Mel Pearson's he will have to pay a severance amount based on his tenure and lose his deferred compensation. Since he just signed this contract, he'll probably have to pay one year's salary. Usually the amount will decrease as length of tenure increases.

Every contract is different. If Jeff's was well negotiated, no buyout would be necessary for a move to the NHL, but almost certainly would have one for any move within the college ranks.

Probably wasn't one for the NHL. Based on what I can piece together from assorted sites, he isn't going to get much, if any of a raise to be a NHL assistant, which is why it's so rare to see college coaches jump to a NHL job that isn't a head coach. He's doing it because his ultimate goal was to coach in the NHL, not for the immediate money.

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

I would think it is a pay cut

Probably, the only thing that keeps me from saying definite is that Babcock is the highest paid NHL head coach last I heard at around $2 million, so they could be willing to pay assistants, even inexperienced ones around 350k in Detroit. I think usually assistants make about half that.

I'm going to take a pretty educated guess and say he's likely taking a pay cut to join the Wings. Likely he'll make more than he did last year, but nothing near the $275k plus a potential $100k more in bonuses.

Bronconick, I'm sorry but that is not true at all. First, Miami is not driving this bus, the WCHA powers (DU, UND) are. Second, Miami had no choice when iinvited and badly wants Notre Dame and Western in the new league. That was what they thought would happen, but Notre Dame is the key now for Western, not Miami. Do you think Miami could say to this group "Keep Western out or we're not coming." That's ridiculous, the new league would say see you later. As many have pointed out, they don't need Miami, our recent success notwithstanding. Why would Miami not want Western in? Of course Miami wants Western with them. And third, I am sure there a lot of good candidates, but if you get Brekke, you will be very happy.

Miami had "no choice?" They could have elected to remain a member of the CCHA.

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

Sounds like Notre Dame may have used the dagger...

https://www.ironmountaindailynews.c...2/Hockey-conference-realignment.html?nav=5006

"Notre Dame remains uncommitted to any conference at this time and is pressing for a smaller league that features a larger non-conference slate, according to multiple Mining Journal sources. The Irish are looking for a seven-team league with a 24-game conference schedule in order to fill the rest of their dates with meetings against fellow Bowl Championship Subdivision member Boston College and the Big Ten schools."

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

Any from KZoo or WMU have any ideas about new coaching candidates?

Re: WMU Coaching search 2011. Yeah, we're boned.

Literally yes, but Miami had no choice if they were to do what is best for their program, just like Western, NMU, BG, et al. would have no choice if they were invited. ND has a choice, IMO, the rest of us do not. By the way if ND is worried about too many league games with eight teams (that is why ND is Western's problem, not Miami), the new league should have eight teams and two divisions, UMD, DU, CC, UND in the "west" and UNO, ND, WMU, and Miami in the "central." You play everyone in your division four times, everyone on the the other side two times = 20 games. That keeps travel down some and allows the teams to schedule a lot of non-conference (ND/BC, BU; Miami/OSU or MSU/UM, etc.). That meshes with the Big 10 because they will have only 20 league games also. Lots of attractive non-league possibilities. Playoffs could be 1x4/4x1 crossover, 2x3/3x2 crossover, etc.
