Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2025-2026

It was well beyond our comfort zone in price, but we decided what the heck, we're not getting any younger and we didn't take a vacation this year due to my husband's wonky hip. So, we went. The lower level of Buck & Honey's was pretty much packed but it wasn't an overly large space. Maybe 100? I wish I had taken notes during the lengthy (one hour!) and very interesting Q & A session with Coach J. He was actually quite forthcoming (and yes, the word "opportunity" would have made for a good drinking game).
Tell us your thoughts from your notes. We've got 3 plus months to bridge here.

Challenge accepted, Timothy A!
Coach mentioned that he did not think that a Big 10 women's hockey league would be forthcoming any time soon. As I recall, he feels like the B10 schools without women's hockey have other athletic priorities that do not include spending money on women's hockey. He also said that from his point of view, he would not want the Big 10 schools to leave the WCHA because of the negative effect that would have on the other non-B10 schools in the league. He didn't see a reasonable way for them to join another league or to create a new one.

"Other athletic priorities": every available dollar goes to football (and basketball, to a lesser extent).

That's always been generally the case, but no moreso than now, with the changing landscape and the ability/need for schools to pay kids. NIL and the transfer portal have turned collegiate athletics into eBay.

I don't think anyone associated with women's college hockey thinks a b10 women's hockey conference would ever be a good idea.

Yes, and I can't imagine the damage all this will do internally to team morale. I mean, there were always athletes with full scholarships and athletes without scholarships or with minimal scholarships. But now the gulf on some teams will be insurmountable, in my opinion. Some players will be paid like CEOs and execs while others will be paid little or nothing. Nothing says "team spirit" like manufactured prima donnas (or "donnos" if I can make up a masculine version of the term). Who knows what the future will hold for these "income" sports, but I probably won't be following them.

More schedule info! Per the friends of Maine women's hockey newsletter, the Black Bears will indeed be making the return trip to Madison. That series is scheduled for the first weekend in October.
So that fills the 2 week gap between the games at bsu and the home games with umd a bit. Nice.

One of five 09s to make the U18 team last year. Not sure if that's due to the strength of that class or the weakness of the classes ahead. Probably won't be the only one of them to choose Wisconsin.

Arrticles from back in February.

And Brianna Decker was named to the hhof. Very well deserved. One day…. I’d like to look and see who played on the US teams from 2013 -2019, completing the drive for 5 consecutive IIHF world championships and Olympic gold. Decker was on all those teams, probably one
Of only a few to be on all of them

I can help you with that. Here's the full list of players who were on every one of those teams:
Lee Stecklein
Brianna Decker
Hilary Knight
Kacey Bellamy
Kendall Coyne

Alex Rigsby was at every one of the golds (not the silver in 2014), but was only the primary starter in 2016 and 2019.

Thanks gopher! Truly the elite of the elite. I just watched some old 2017 WWC gmg highlights. Every American point was scored by those players.
