Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2024-2025

I know this was discussed before but don't remember if anything definitive came out of it. Looking at the Bio for Quinn Kuntz, it shows the 20-21 season, which was the covid year, it states, "Did not play (Redshirt Season)." Just being on the roster, even if you did not play in any games that season, would allow you the extra covid year automatically. By not playing in any of the games, you could redshirt like any other year. This would give you 2 additional years for the 1 covid year. Don't know if this makes sense or not, but that could be an explanation for being eligible this year.

It doesn't to me.

Extra COVID years were awarded to those players who participated in the unknown of what the COVID season would turn out to be. The entirety of the Ivy League chose to not participate, so none of those athletes were given the extra year of eligibility. Because they did not participate.

Taking a red shirt year is choosing to not participate. So I see no reason why she would have gotten the extra year for non-participation.

I do not understand how she has eligibility for 2024-25.

Taking a red shirt year is choosing to not participate.

A player can choose to participate, practice with the team all year, suit up for every game, but the coach never puts them in a game for the entire season, can still use a redshirt year for that season. You don't need to declare a redshirt before you start a season.

I am aware of all of that (in fact, one cannot 'declare' for a redshirt until the season is over). It does not change the fact that the "dangerous" part of participation was being on the ice with the other teams and players, outside of the team "bubble.".

Are you aware of another player who took a red shirt during COVID but nevertheless was allowed the additional year? I'm not.

Anybody aware of anyone in a similar circumstance as Kuntz?

On the issue of Kunz getting 6 years of eligibility.

Kunz’s first year at OhSt was the one in which the NCAA Championship was cancelled due to covid. She had not yet declared a redshirt prior to the cancellation, so she ended up with a total of 6 years of eligibility after she used a redshirt the following year. (To be honest, I have wondered why only the players on the 8 teams that were about to begin play in the tournament weren’t the only ones to be given the extra year. The impact for the loss of these games was a chance to be on a championship team, one that would have been especially important to players in their final year of eligibility. Everyone else had finished their full schedule of games and their seasons had ended. But I often fail to grasp the rational for NCAA decisions.)

So, this season WILL be her last. I also was surprised by her being listed on the roster as an Fr. After all, her bio makes it evident she has performed rather well academically. I also seem to recall that her OhSt roster info indicated she had started graduate school. Ergo, I am of the opinion that the Fr is a typo. It should be Gr for being a graduate student unless she is embarking on another degree that requires a new 4year commitment.

As for whether anyone else found themselves having the same option, I think one would have to browse the roster histories of other schools. Best to close the window.

Her first year at OSU was the 2019-20 season; she did not red shirt, she played in two games. Noone was given any extra time for the 2019-20 season. It was a "completed" regular season, and any seniors on the NCAA tournament teams - like Abby Roque, for instance - were simply out of luck and out of eligibility.

The year she is listed as having redshirted in 2020-21, the COVID season when games were cancelled due to teams and players falling ill, but a season and tournament were played, and the extra year of eligibility was granted to those who participated. The question is whether being with the team while redshirting is enough "participation" to warrant the granting of the extra year. She then played in games for the next three years, 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24. She has competed during four years within a five year period.

Maybe she petitioned the NCAA for an extra year and it was granted.

Let's talk D. They are all lefties but Bickett (who doesn't seem destined to play a whole lot) and Kotlowski. That's very interesting. One would think you'd want the D to have the forehand along the boards. On the PP I don't think it's as critical as 5 x 5, but there too the angle of the pass from the boards stays a bit further away from the defenders playing up high.

Assuming the D pairs will be:

KK Jungles
Potter Murphy
Kotlowski Venusio
Bickett

I hope Venusio get some PP time, rumor has it she has a heavy shot.

Great catch on the loads of lefty D. Seems like a bit of an issue in traditional hockey logic. I guess MJ isn't as traditional as I thought- ha.

I'd agree with your first pairing- that's what they went with for the whole season I think. They worked well together and were heavily relied upon in big situations.

I'd say things get interesting between Potter, Murphy, and Venusio. I think Kotlowski will be on the 3rd pair almost definitely, but I think those other three could shift around tons. Not sure how aggressive Venusio will be- pretty sure she's very fast, and like you said, has a great shot. I think Venusio could move up to play with Potter and put Murphy back with Kotlowski. I would assume a lot of it comes down to chemistry and how well they work together between those bottom four/five. Looking forward to seeing some Badger hockey in Labahn in just a few short weeks!!

Let's talk G. I think the split time era is over. MJ rides one goalie when they are clearly the best. Ava will get all the starts if healthy. That's how he handled the Rigsby - ARD - Soup - Blair period. The back-ups got no starts unless of injury. I always wanted Blessi and Cece to get some starts, but it just never happened. It was great to see Kronish work her way up and anchor a Natty.

Random tidbit. I have wondered about this concept for years, since the 1980 Olympics. The Russian team had 17 of 20 skaters being left hand shots, including all defensemen. The '84 team had 20 of 20 skaters left hand shots. Years before and after have been predominantly the same. I have some assumptions why, but that's a different conversation.

Sorry robert.

Let's have the conversation!!!

The prevailing logic now is that NHL teams prefer right-handers to play RD and lefties to play LD. Analytically, a d-man playing on their off-hand has to be a significantly better player to achieve the same statistics as a lesser d-man playing on their strong side. Mike Babcock, with all of his faults, describes the philosophy here:

Yeah this is exactly what I was thinking. I guess they'll have the talent to overcome it to a certain point but you don't want it to be situation where you're giving up possession because you're on your backhand and not your forehand as he stated. I suppose too perhaps he was recruiting righties but he just didn't happen to get any.

While what he states is true, the game has continue to change in the 8 years since the clip was recorded. I think we can agree NCAA women's hockey isn't the same pace as the NHL. There should be a bit more time to make purposeful passes and not have to just shoot the puck up the boards. A lot of teams currently use a center lane breakout that wasn't as prominent 8 years ago. Just like about everything there are pluses and minuses. I guess we will just have to see how they coach through it to see if it is a handicap or not. Just my opinion not saying it won't be an issue. Time will tell.

I don't think it will be a handicap at all, but it will be interesting to see if teams on equal footing with WI will try and breakout more towards the wrong handed D when practicable. I'll have no way of knowing if they are or aren't because the game will move too fast for me to pick up on that, especially when I'm attending the games.

Looks like we have a new commit via Instagram....D Emma Cerruti out of SSM. A native of Norwell AM. She a righty, 5-8. Her first year at SSM she was 5g 16a in 61gp, last year 8g 24a in 57gp.

Single games tickets went on sale for the 2024 calendar year at 9:00 am today. I was able to secure the tickets I wanted, however the $5.00 service fee on every ticket is ridiculous. It would not let you do a mass purchase and have only 1 service fee. You had to order each individually. Watts a crock of sheeeit. $16.00 per ticket is getting to a point where it's not a family friendly event price-wise anymore. It's certainly not the best deal in town anymore.

I have a friend who wanted me to get him some single-game tickets to volleyball, and that purchase process allowed a person to 'continue shopping', and not go through checkout until you had all the games and tickets you wanted. So 'they' know how to get the web site to do that.
