Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2023-2024

The Kohl Center ice is even bigger than LaBahn. Or at least it used to be. There's always talk about shrinking it (as a way to fit in more seats?) but I don't think they've done so yet. The Gophers shrunk the ice at Mariucci this year from 100' wide to 89'; still not NHL though.

You can look at the red 'hash marks' to the outside of the faceoff circles and see how close or far they are from the boards to see how close to NHL 85' the ice is. For an 85' rink, there's 3 1/2 feet; at LaBahn for example, there's 6'; at St Cloud, there's 11'.

The Kohl center ice sheet will be shrunk to NHL sized in the next 2 years for player development.

I sure hope Harvey is back for this next series.

If anyone is in the Madison area, the Fitchburg BW3 said they would play the Rivalry Series game today. My dad and I will be there cheering on all the Badgers. Mainly the American ones.

Story in The Athletic today about Laila Edwards, https://theathletic.com/5045886/2023/11/11/laila-edwards-usa-hockey-debut/?source=emp_shared_article
In an interview for the article, Hilary Knight describes Edwards after being on a line with her in training camp as an “up-and-coming talent”: “Her size is incredible. The way she can rip the puck, it looks like it’s about to break the glass or rip the netting,” she said. “I wish I had all those things at that age.”
The story also has quotes from Edwards, BC alum Blake Bolden, Chayla Edwards, and Wroblewski, about Edwards' skillset and inspiration to Black girls.

Per Coach Johnson's press conference today, no KK this weekend but she did start skating yesterday and looked good so things are trending in the right direction. Wilgren is practicing and looks positive to play.

Potter Murphy Edwards Wilgren are going to log a lot of icetime this weekend. Wilgren is just coming back from injury, hopefully she gets through the weekend healthy. They have a lot of good film from the last series on how to play w/o Harvey. The eye test was worrisome. I don't want UW to get Minnesotaed by the Calamity Jane Gang.

The thing I really dislike about this series is the rink size difference. MJ likes a bigger rink and maybe it gives UW a bigger home ice advantage, but that first period of the first game at Tosu is hard to watch.

The tunnelers just don't have the talent to match what the sinners or yuckeyes have...And that ain't sandbagging. The fact that the tunnelers hung with the yuckeyes should be encouraging to you even with #4 out.

Pay attention to the faceoff circles, and whether the line judges will make OSU line up fairly, or take their usual unfair advantage.

When's MJ gonna release who signed up for next year? The #1 ranked boys launched the info today.

It was after November 15th last year. This was in Todd Milewski's article at the time: "Neither the Badgers men's nor women's hockey teams publicizes its recruits individually when they're confirmed by the school's compliance department on signing day. They instead are unveiled as a group when everyone is signed, a process that usually stretches a few days or weeks."

Finley McCarthy posted on Instagram a video of her signing day at BK Selects. Emma Venusio was in British Columbia helping her team win the Canadian U18 National Championship the last few days, so she might not have gotten ink to paper quite yet.

I assume you inadvertently omitted Jungels, unless you know something about her not being available.

Good point. Will we be able to actually see it with the circa 1982 video system/set-up they have?

Meaningless stat of the day.....UW has scored 1 PPG in the lest 18 games against Tosu. Does that not blow your mind? It does mine almost as much as 3 teams in the WWCHA have zero points in the league yet 8 games in.

The recruits that SHOULD sign are: F) Finley McCarthy, F) Hannah Halverson, D) Emma Venusio and F) Maggie Scannel.

Well that kind of went how I thought it would unfortunately. I did not see any of game one sadly I had a personal event occur that I needed to address. Statistically it looks like it turned out like I thought it would. I did watch the second game second period third period and overtime. Wisconsin played better as those periods went on and definitely had a chance to win in game two but just couldn't get that goal.

Hopefully when the rematch happens Wisconsin will have a healthy roster. That's certainly will help even things out a bit.

Now I'm not trying to disrespect but I was talking with one of the Wisconsin hockey mom's at the game last night and I mentioned I'm sure Johnson will make adjustments and she immediately soured and said he doesn't coach.
She went on to say Johnson recruits top players and let's the girls figure it out for themselves and that's all he does and she was adamant she knows what she's talking about! To be honest I was rather shocked by what she said and her daughter has been on the roster for awhile so is this true or was this a parent angry about something? I obviously don't know Mr.Johnson or the inner workings of Wisconsin's program to verify this mothers opinion but my thoughts were WOW!

I would always take the reaction of any hockey parent after a poor weekend with an entire shaker of salt, but part of Johnson's philosophy (and his dad's, for that matter) is that you install systems and then you give the players the freedom to play. He is not and has never been a rigid coach.

You don't have to take my word for it: “He’s a very hands-off coach,” says Abby Roque ’20, a Kazmaier Award finalist and WCHA Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year. She played for Johnson until her senior season was cut short by the pandemic in 2020. “He’ll let you play your game and give you the resources and the practices to get better.”

That said, the idea that he "doesn't coach" is quite frankly ludicrous.

Anyone has been around the sport long enough should know that hockey moms, while incredibly passionate and dedicated, are not reliable narrators.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't the case with this particular hockey mom but I've observed most hockey mom's tailgate pretty hard and I'm not talking about the food, LOL!
