Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2023-2024

I actually looked her up, and she's a freshman who ran track (other sports?) in high school, majoring in communications/broadcasting; so, she's been on campus all of six weeks at this point. So I'd go easy on her; it's not her fault she was assigned to do something she had no idea how to do.

It's also on YOU as the "employee" to put yourself in good position to succeed. She completely embarrassed herself on a national platform. If you are assigning me to do color momentary on a cricket game, I'd say 'No, I don't know the first thing about cricket, you are putting me in a spot where I will fail and look completely incompetent. No thanks, can you assign me to something else?" This isn't a highschool kid doing a D4 game, it's the big freaking 10 we are talking about.

Since volleyball was on 1070 this evening wasn't the hockey game broadcast on an alternative radio station?

Also a question. I read that Britta can win 4 Nattys during her college career here if we go all the way. Has any other female let alone male ever one 4 national titles during their college career?

Gorbatenko is a very nice player. Shoots the puck hard, is great on the puck, looked more impactful than Hall. Le is my mega snake bitten, did not bury some great chances. Nice to see OB get one, she seems to be off to a slow start. Also great to see UW adjusting to what Kato was doing and not allowing the game to be close like the last 2 periods yesterday. KK is such a special player. I have never seen a d be as aggressive as she is like constantly.

So I'd go easy on her; it's not her fault she was assigned to do something she had no idea how to do.

At one point she called a faceoff, a kickoff. I don't mind though. The purpose of the broadcasts is for students to learn. If that's what it takes to be able to watch games, I'm all for it. You can't learn to swim if your not thrown in the water.

I wonder what would happen if one were to print out the 'digital only' QR code and take it to a game. Would the scanner be able to tell the difference? Is there a time-stamp or some other 'element' embedded in it that would somehow invalidate the printed one? I might have to try it, to see what happens. (And then would it work the same way next year that it might this year?)

After my wife and I got into a game last week, I thought what if I take a screenshot of a ticket in the wallet and text it to her. Later I see in the FAQs on the website that you cannot do that. How would the scanner know the difference between the picture on my phone and an identical picture on another phone? I may be inclined to try this also.

Caroline Harvey is playing at such an incredibly high level. Forget that the stat sheets says 2-14-16; those 14 assists aren't being handed out by a generous official scorer like candy on Halloween. How many of Eden's redirects have come off KK's shots for the point? How many of Simms et. al. goals are perfectly executed centering passing from Harvey? I know these games havent been against the gophers, buckeyes, and bulldogs, but I don't know if I've ever seen a Wisconsin defenseman in the same zip code as Harvey offensively.

A few comments after watching the MNSt games.

Curl and Eden are off to a remarkable start – Eden with 11 goals and Curl with 20 points - as they have developed strong chemistry as indicated by Curl having the primary assists on 7 of Eden’s 11 goals. Once Hall has become more attuned to how the other two play, I expect her to become more of a force as well.

Simms has picked up where she left off last year. O’Brien has been struggling a bit thus far, but once she regains form, their line with Wheeler will be a force for other teams to contend with also.

Picard and Woz are playing with more speed and overall intensity this year too, and they complement each other well. LEdwards has been demonstrating more speed and aggressiveness than last year and I believe she will become a major threat around the crease and in the slot once she has become more comfortable playing on the line with Woz and Picard.

Gorbatenko gave a glimpse at her potential as a member of a true FLine. She has speed, a nice hard shot, made some good passes, and isn’t shy along the boards and around the net. I found myself thinking about her on a 4[SUP]th[/SUP] FLine with Vasseur and Enright if they were not out with injuries. That likely would give the Badgers four very competitive FLines.

As for D, Harvey simply is fun to watch. She is fast, fluid, calm, focused - makes everything look effortless. She is having fun, and we are fortunate we get to share in it. Murphy and Potter are a good tandem, and it is nice to know they will be around for a few more years. Jungels continues her quiet, steady play, and Wilgren is solid in her pairing with Harvey. So, the future on D looks bright, and I am anxious for the first encounters with the other members of the WCHA top 4.

A final comment on Curl. To me, she fits the mold of a captain. She is a gritty player who tends to take up residence around the goal, quietly positioning herself for deflecting shots on goal or to pass to a teammate who is in position for a stronger scoring opportunity. The fact that she leads the team in blocks speaks of her attention to playing D as well.

Speaking of the other members of the WCHA 4, I also watched the OHSt-UMD games on B1G+ this weekend. Frankly, I had expected the games would be more entertaining, but I came away somewhat baffled. UMD looked lethargic on offense – slow with sloppy passing and constantly struggling to get out of their zone. There was a stretch of 20 minutes in the first game when they did not manage to take a single shot. OHSt was quicker but its offense was not overwhelming - a lot more shots but not many of high quality. And OHSt’s 2 goals in the second game were at the start of the second period in the final 1:45 of a dubious 5-minute major. UMD’s goalie did make some solid saves, but, in my view, most were somewhat pedestrian. But she is in her first year and, given UMD's history with goalies, probably will be solid before long. Still, I did not see the intense level of play typical of this matchup.

UMD is at MNSt this coming weekend and it will be interesting to see how those games turn out. MN at OHSt in 2 weeks should provide a good look at those two. When these games are over, the Badgers should have a decent sense of what to expect from the other traditional WCHA top 4 prior to the stretch in which they play them consecutively to finish the first half of WCHA play - an interesting feat of scheduling.

I appreciate the comments about UMD and tosu. It is a weird scheduling quirk that UW is driving blind measuring stick-wise until those last 8 first half games. The St. Cloud series could be tough and I hope they don't roll into it over-confident. They probably will be numb to dealing with adversity, which they kind of are at this point other than the one BC game. At least they get a tuner series before the big one. They still could be averaging 9 goals per game until that game. Let's enjoy the ride!

Got a chance to see a fair amount of the yuckeye/chihuahua series as well as some of the sinner/landcow series. I have seen quite a bit of the sinners in their first few games as well as the tunnelers.

This is the pecking order as I see it...

Wisconsin - Absolutely loaded and by far the best team in the WCHA as well as the country and it is not even close. Multiple players will be PK candidates.

Ohio State - It's a good thing they got a lot of transfers to come in as their lineup would be more like UofM' and UMD's if not for that. With that they are better than the 2 sister Minnesota Universities.

Minnesota - This is the most underwhelming UM team I have seen in a long while outside of the Covid shortened season. Only two players (Murphy and Huber) would see regular ice time with the top two teams.

UMD - Very underwhelming lineup as well and the difference between them and UofM is fairly small...Maybe the two players mentioned above.

Watts? We were told the travelling Muzzinator Circus of All Stars was the most talented women's team on the planet. WI is just a bunch of 18 and 19 yr old kinds barely out of HS, except for Curl who is nearing the Kessel stratosphere in terms of being on a team in perpetuity.

Wait 'til we're still talking about Lacey Eden in the spring of 2026.

LOL.

The BSU series is sold out. I don't recall that opponent generating this kind of interest too often.

Undoubtedly UW is going to lose some games when they run the gauntlet, it will be fascinating to see how they react to some adversity.

You know UW's concession prices are too high when I can feed my wife, myself and my daughter for less money for superior food at 5 Guys than LaBahn.

I see that Wisconsin is pummeling Bemidji by the score of 0 to 0 after one period.

the girls are frazzled. Taylor Swift’s boyfriend gave Laila Edwards a shout out on his podcast. I mean that just doesn’t happen everyday.

they’ll get it together and get their W I’m sure.

Big advantage in the shots on goal; still scoreless after 2 periods. Some chippiness is coming out.

Now we await word on KK Harvey...

Really hope she is OK and that it is a hyperextended or sprained knee and not ACL. Certainly was in a lot of pain and couldn’t put pressure on left leg.

If she is out an extended period, they have D depth with Kotlowski and Helgeson but then a 4th forward line won’t unless unless Enright or Vasseur get healthy. Any word on those 2?

She gets hit more from the side, so I'm hoping at worst an MCL problem. not ACL. And if so, we get into the semantics of sprain/strain/tear. Grade 1 MCL sprain/tear can be as little as a couple weeks, grade 2 maybe 4-6 weeks. It must be something about the blood flow, etc, but MCLs don't need surgery nearly as often as ACLs. And maybe it's just a bruise, etc. Fingers crossed.
