Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2021-2022

At this point I'm actually considering not going to the game today.
Find somewhere you can park for free not that far away and take an Uber to the game. You can be with your daughter throughout, she won't have to walk any further, and it won't cost you that much more. You don't want to miss Senior Day do you?

Excellent suggestion.

The really close lots will be full of basketball fans parking, but there are city-run lots not all that much farther that should be OK. The Capitol Square North ramp at 218 E Mifflin, the Wilson St ramp a block over from the City-County building, or even the parking ramp at Monona Terrace.

Turns out events that conspired in the AM that did not conform to my hoped schedule sunk us going to the game. That's the way life goes. I did get to listen the the portion of the game on the radio where Kato scored twice and got to 3-2, that was enjoyable. Not. Attendance looked a little thin on the Tweeder posts.

Great to see the co-third line centers score 3! Drake gets 2 on Sr. day and GS scores and then gets hammered afterwards, that should have been a penalty if one was not called.

Blair's save % is getting hammered too, but she's not getting any help in transition, that is for sure.

How ironic I post about UW players not getting a lot of apples and then the WOW line cuts down an apple tree this weekend. Watts up to 8th in assists.

SS is getting chances but she continues to be snakebit. She had a great chance on Friday but she couldn't/didn't lift the puck and the pad made the save.

I really thought Watts had no chance at the scoring record, but suddenly she's within range. She has at least 6 games left and 9 if they go all the way.

Watts really was outstanding yesterday. A couple below-the-goal plays that, dare I say, reminded me of Gretzky. Let's hope she's started on a Pankowski carry-the-team run. Somebody's gonna have to, to overcome the D lapses.

And Drake getting two on Senior day was nice. I'm not sure how often her dad makes it to LaBahn but he was certainly there yesterday.

This is a Minnesota State question, but with regards to the just-completed series in Madison...

The box scores from the WCHA are implying that MSU only used 13 skaters in each game (and only 14 for the series). Can any of you who were at either game validate that?

Mankato had 14 skaters and a goalie on Friday, 13 skaters and a goalie on Saturday. (One of the Mankato skaters was injured in a collision with her teammate early in Friday's game.)

Much obliged for the quick reply.

And... yikes. That's about as bad as when they went to Columbus earlier this season with a fourth-string goaltender they pulled in from the school's tennis team (who, thankfully, had HS goaltending experience).

My understanding is that tennis season has now started, so the back-up goalie was unavailable.

Like I said in the OSU thread, I don't have a good feeling about this weekend's games. The 2nd line isn't scoring, the pp isn't either and the transitional D is as leaky as I have EVER seen it. That is not a formala for success against OSU or any opponent they will see in the ncaa's. I don't know if the WOW line can save them.

When will the WCHA round 1 tickets go on sale?

WOW to the rescue............

Does anyone know the minimum number of games for a player before she loses a year of eligibility? I know a medical redshirt to add a year is permitted as long as certain criteria are satisfied, but my recollection is playing in a small number of games also is allowed without the cost of year. But I may be extending the change in the rules for football without cause. I ask because the top OSU goalie, Braendli, played 12 games (including in Madison at the start of WCHA play) before joining the Swiss National team at the Olympics. Whatever the number is, 12 games certainly exceed it unless the NCAA suddenly has become more generous than I could ever imagine.

That she has done this raises the possibility that she may rejoin OSU for the remainder of its season thereby improving its chances through the playoffs. I suppose it would be possible for her to have managed a return flight to Columbus to play this weekend but remaining with the team until after the Olympic closing ceremony would not be surprising. She is an outstanding goalie and waiting until then would not be detrimental to OSU’s chances in the WCHA playoffs or the NCAA. I hope she stays in Beijing for the closing ceremony. This weekend will be tough enough without her presence.

I also am curious about the discussion between her and the OSU head coach that led to the decision to play her. I think she retains the extra Covid year of eligibility, and she will return next year. Still, the choice is so different than the path followed by the Badgers who went to the USA Olympic tryouts. One factor may have been relative opportunities for quality playing time before the Olympics. The US had scheduled a series against Canada. A similar opportunity for the Swiss may not have been available, making the quality of WCHA play a substitute.

The limit for a 'medical hardship', aka medical redshirt, is 30% of the team's regular season contests; and none after the mid-point of the season. But going off to the Olympics wouldn't qualify for a medical hardship; it has to be a true season-ending injury.

Players in Braendli's situation regularly play with their NCAA team, then go off to the Olympics, and return to finish their college season. I assume Braendli will be doing so as well, though I don't know whether shell be available this weekend.

Down 3-0 in the first. They just aren’t good enough in the back end to be serious title contenders at this point

I hate stating anything definitive based upon the feed from Columbus, but the Badgers look sluggish. There have been several times when OSU has brought the puck into the zone 2-on-2, and then, all of a sudden, a Wisconsin defenseman has fallen behind the play and it's a 2-on-1.
