Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXX: 1 All American at a Time

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXX: 1 All American at a Time

Sounds like 2 Wisconsin recruits have been traded/had their rights traded in the USHL today. Lot of activity picking up, so it won't be surprising if we hear a few more names get moved before the deadline.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXX: 1 All American at a Time

The thing that bites is it would appear that Wisconsin is a bit handcuffed in what to do with that scholarship. If they feel they're still in the mix with Boeser then they probably aren't going to offer a kid a guaranteed spot next year and might be in the position of only being able to say "We'll bring you in next year if Boeser doesn't come, or the following year if he does." Which obviously is not going to equate to replacing Boeser with a top prospect.

Not sure, but I'd think if they knew Boeser was out for sure they'd be offering a kid like Tkachuk, or someone... I don't know. It's an odd situation. I guess that's what happens in a sport where you give less scholarships than you actually need to field a lineup.

Matt Berkovitz has been traded from Sioux City to Green Bay. Additonally, Joey Abate's rights have been traded from Tri-City to Bloomington.

In case anyone is wondering, the reports I'm hearing on Berkovitz are not good. It will be a huge mistake if Wisconsin brings him next year.

I know you're not saying otherwise, Chuck, but just want to make this point...this kid CAN play. I've watched him with TW for several years. It's a big jump from HS to USHL. And then for Matt, that transition was compounded by an early trade (Chicago had ZERO patience) and then a stint on the 45 day IR with SC. I'm sure you're right that he's not ready to help UW next year, but all is not lost for him. He needs consistent ice and a summer in the weight room building strength. He has struggled, but he's got time to figure it out. In all honesty, and setting pride aside, he may be better served heading to the NAHL and getting his "mojo" back. Especially with Dmen, that's an issue.

I would agree with most of that. I think he can play, too, and I've seen him enough in those same settings to know how he compares to kids in his age group. The concern I have (and many others as well) is his drive to be an elite hockey player. Up to this point he's gotten by on natural ability. He quickly found out this season that it won't fly at the USHL level. I think he can be a productive player at the college level down the road, but be it would be better for his development to spend another year in junior hockey.

I know I've mentioned him on the blog a few times already but not sure If I've talked about him here or not. Gophers were in Eau Claire last night to watch Memorial freshman defenseman Ty Emberson. Badgers showed first interest in him this fall. Should be interesting to watch this one play out.

Works out well as a Gopher fan because if he picks the badgers, it doesn't really hurt at all.

I meant if we lose him, it's easier to tell ourselves it's because he's from wisconsin. Doesn't sting throughout a career like Besse does and Gersich might.

Oh don't worry, I am sure Eaves can find a way to stifle Besse's offensive stats.... He sure plays well against you guys though.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXX: 1 All American at a Time

Interesting he is on a line with Sheehy and Novak.

My question is if Wisconsin would have offered Sheehy and got him (as all indications were that he would have come to Wisconsin if offered), would they be in the situation now of losing Boeser?

For whatever reason they didn't want Sheehy over the guys they had or felt they would get. Offering him one of your (very limited number of) rides on the basis that he could/would end up playing on a line with (and MAYBE influencing) a kid you already have committed seems a pretty far stretch.

That's not what I am saying. If they would have offered Sheehy and he was a future / current badger, would Boeser have decommitted from UW? Sounds like he was / is getting pressure to go to the goofs with his two linemates. That's all I am saying.

Got it. I think it depends on if you take what Boeser has said in the press at face value or not. If you do, then I think yes, he decommits anyway and takes this year to figure out what he wants to do. If it's all just smoke and mirrors to make going to MN (or UND) seem better publicly, than I guess maybe there's possibly something to that thought.

The last two interviews I've seen still phrase it as "Wisconsin, then MN or UND." That's odd to me. Or it isn't. I have no idea.

If it were my kid I'd advise him going to play with the same linemates at the next level might be fun, but I'm not sure it would be the best thing for developing all around. Seeking new challenges beyond your comfort zone is what builds character and develops the person. And college is the time to strike out and make your own way and your own name. But that's just me. And my Red glasses.
