Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXX: 1 All American at a Time

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXX: 1 All American at a Time

Matt Freytag was really good with the puck. He controlled the puck very well in the offensive zone multiple times and did a nice job finding open players. He seems to skate a bit upright when going full speed.

Seamus Malone was pretty good without the puck. He seemed to have a real feel for the game and where he might have an chance at regaining puck possession when on defense. He seemed really calm and poised no matter what the situation was on the ice.

Thanks for being our eyes on the lads. It's good to read some good news.

Honestly the best youth player I ever saw from this area (Madison metro) in the 97-99 range.

Not only that, but a really nice kid. Happy for him.

Got to coach him one summer during squirts and we won the league championship game coz I basically left him and my boy out there on defense for the last 4 minutes or so to shut down the one kid on the other team that was killing us. The other D pair was giving up a goal per shift in the third.

Like to think I had an impact on his career. :D

Gotta think that the Summer League Squirt Championship game was a defining moment.

Also remember playing with him on the neighborhood rink that was basically outside his front door.

He was a squirt or maybe a pee wee and he was the one kid out there that I had trouble defending. Most kids of that age are pretty easy to handle and you just go half speed.

I could defend him (as much as you try to shut anyone down on the pond - which isn't much), but I had to work hard to do it and sometimes he'd beat me despite my efforts.

Could see it back then how good he was gonna be and always thought he was one of the locals that had D-1 potential.

Really cool to see a kid I know make it and best yet, play for the Badgers.

Was also a really good lacrosse player and on my son's teams from time to time.

Also... my kid's team plays West at the Coliseum tomorrow afternoon before the Capitols game, which may be the last time my kid gets to play against him.

Wonder if he'll go junior next year.

My brother coached a former Badger star in youth hockey that went on to spend 7 years in the NHL. (Plus they were neighbors.) He says the same thing.

All the time.

Mick Messner is a good addition. Clearly the best '99 player out of Wisconsin. He's the reason I had to laugh when others were going on a tirade after Ohio State took a commitment from Caufield out of Stevens Point. No offense to Caufield at all, but Messner is the in-state kid you want in that class.

I've only gone to one Madison high school game this year. One night last month I happened to be on the west side, had some time, AND I wanted to see what the hell has happened to Madison's east side hockey since I'm a long time east sider (obvious train wreck). LaF/East was at West. I don't recall if Messner scored any goals, but he definitely stood out to me. I figured it was only against the east siders, but I'll take your word for it!

His numbers aren't very inspiring this season but I've seen him play at that Tier 1 level with Team Wisconsin against the best of the best in the country. He's a good player.

The east side team is in such a sad state that the better players actually avoid scoring in games against them and typically try to get the 3rd and 4th line players goals.

Not trying to knock them, but that may be why Messner didn't score. It certainly wasn't because he couldn't.

That said, the Lakers are better than they were last season and are supposed to have a lot of bodies in the pipeline for future years. I hope so as I've felt bad for them.

While it has to suck losing 15-0, it's not much fun beating a team by that score either. Waste of time for both teams.

Hope they improve at least to the point of being competitive.

Just spoke with Messner about the commitment. Also visited Western Michigan, Yale and Providence. I didn't know this before, but apparently he's related to Jack Skille.

Skille seems to be related to a whole bunch of people in this town. Had a different cousin of his on a team which was cool as Jack came out to a few practices.

Hockey really is an incredibly small world.
