Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

I understand the $ situation, however that doesn't alleviate the concern that something's gone wrong with how they approached 2014-15.

The generalization about grinders is not fallacy, there are 2-3 on the team now that I feel were brought on in a sort of panic mode when players didn't commit in years past. And I'm speaking mainly of WI born players. I've watched your list closely, we've seen talent commit elsewhere and each time it happens the talent on uncomitted list dwindles and I'll note you've alluded to there not being much talent out there remaining (outside of Hughes/Rockwood) as well.

I know you don't like people questioning the coaching staff but we're not stupid, those of us who've seen decades of UW hockey can see this situation is unusual at best...

what's more, if you're Eaves how do you convince #16 or #17 to stay 1 more season if the forwards coming in don't appear as if they'll have an impact or more specifically an immediate impact? That's an extremely tough sell.

I don't care if people question the coaching staff. I do it repeatedly here, on social media and on my website. I'm also not dumb enough (not saying you are either) to realize they (the staff) knows considerably more about what's best than any of us on the outside. Basically, I think it's fair to question why they are in this situation and why it's come to this, but at the same time, I'm willing to let it play out to see what happens.

Can you elaborate on your grinder theory. I'm kind of in a rush this morning but I'd be curious to hear specific examples.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Whew...nice pickup and one sigh of relief. Hopefully we can make headway with Hughes and breath another sigh of relief as he seems like the best case scenerio at this point.

As far as what if the Badger don't land either (well now both)....yes guys have come off the board (Horn, Sheehy, Pavelek) since Chuck listed his 12 to watch...but there are still many options on that list (and the other potential options he lists) that can help the Badgers. Yes Hughes is the crown jewel of that group and the Badgers will be far better off landing him then going to the next man on the list...but that is true every year and this wouldn't be the first time the Badgers have to move on to the next guy and survive. Missing Kessel was the end of the world at one point. Speaking of Chuck's list, I would love to see MacTavish end up a Badger....3rd in the AJHL in scoring (6th in goals), would turn 20 during the season (adding a little maturity to what will be a very young team), and MAYBE a guy that could come on something less then a full scholarship (guessing dad does okay enough as Oiler's GM to chip in financial). Otherwise some of the Shuttucks kids, Naas, Depourq, Racine, ect are viable options of guys that can play on one of the top lines and not be out of place.

Nice to get another in the fold. That's a huge sigh of relief, ad a welcome addition.

And I had completely forgotten about Woods leaving. He would've been a junior this year IIRC, and that is a great example of how even the best laid plans in recruiting can't control everything.

I'm having a brain fart: did Fabbro make a decision yet?

No, that won't come for a little while. He's going to visit the Boston schools and a source also told me North Dakota is in the fight.

Wisconsin has a great connection with some alumni and his family. We'll see. Biggest competition on this will be the Western Hockey League.

Badgers also have mutual interest in a kid by the name of Tyson Jost who is a big time talent and friends with Fabbro. That could help things potentially in UW's favor. They've been known to load up like that before. Help the hand that feeds you.

As I explained in one article along the way things looked a lot better at one point in time. People seem to forget Grant Besse and Jedd Soleway both committed for 2015 originally. Besse was brought in early because of how well he kept playing and the fact they felt he could make an immediate impact, and Soleway replaced the surprising departure of Brendan Woods. And obviously the Christian Dvorak situation. So, those things have certainly added to it.

Thanks for shedding the light. I did forget that Besse and Soleway were 2015's.

Anyway, some awesome news.

MacTavish...Markwojo has a great point about not really needing a full scholly on purely financial terms. He is far and away the best possible guy left in the bchl or the ajhl. I like the 20 yr old Canadian Fr. on the roster. They are more ready for college than the 18 yr old hs guys.

gotcha, and we're generally on the same page then

grinders...8, 26 and 13 come to mind immediately but 13 doesn't play much. IIRC 8 was brought in at a time they whiffed on a few guys...was it Walters and another? 26, way way way to early to bring him in. this should be his frosh season.

I understand 18 and 12 were brought in for specific roles and they fit them nicely but generally I use championship teams (players) as a barometer so if they measure up to Licari-Degenhardt-Brandt that's saying something but I'm not sure if any of these guys match that level.

EDIT: ROCKWELL! FINALLY, now if they can land Hughes that goes a long way for next season

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Was supposed to chat with Rockwood after he got off his plane from Madison tonight but things got tight schedule wise with his BCHL team playing a game in Surrey tonight. Hopefully tomorrow.

How about that though...plays Friday/Saturday/Sunday in the BCHL, gets on a plane to Madison on Monday afternoon. Takes a visit Tuesday. Flies back to Vancouver on Wednesday and is in the lineup Wednesday night.

Also just realized I don't know the difference between flies/flys/fly's. Really feeling stupid right now, guys.

Flies is correct. "Flys" is really not a word except as a mispelling. And "fly's" is not all that useful either. Unless for example you're talking about a fly with socks. Then it would be "the fly's socks."

Back to recruiting. I would like to report I still haven't been offered.

I know, bizarre, isn't it?

This site's posts don't have to be grammatically perfect, you are among friends. It isn't like you are getting paid to fill us in on stuff, on this site anyway.

Hughes sure is taking his own sweet time. Maybe Rockwood committing will somehow make him more interested.

Hughes is probably not the caliber of recruit you are going to pressure into making a decision on anyone's timeframe but his own. As I recall, there may not even be a burning desire to necessarily go to college this fall with some though he might benefit from maturing another year physically. If he want's to look at other schools to have a point of reference for comparison, you can't really blame him. Hopefully when he sees other schools, UW standsout and he joins Rockwood.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Spencer Naas committed to UConn, by the way. I'm pretty surprised by that. Either way, he's off the board.

Yeah, I know UConn is going to Hockey East and all but I though Naas was a pretty big recruit from BSM and all...Shocked is the word I'd use...

You can't underestimate UConn giving him a chance to step in right away and play next season. I don't know where he stood on offers, but that's one possibility I'd assume.
