Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

I am easily confused. So they aren't interested in Sheehy as he his going elsewhere and the hold that thought was related to Hughes?

I remain pessimistic for next year.

It's not confusing guys.

They aren't interested in Sheehy. He's moved on.
They have offered Hughes and are bringing in Rockwood for a visit where he'll likely get offered.

I'd assume they are 1-2 on the board now.

And when UW gets to whoever #3 is on the board, there likely won't be enough money leftover to put together much of a scholarship offer.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

unlike Minnesota that needs big numbers in the '15 class
The Gophers graduate two this year, and five next year. They have the following lined up already:
Bristedt (14), Ramsey (14/15), Novak (15), Norman (15), Baker (15), Pitlick (16)
Doesn't feel like we need big numbers as Fasching would probably be the only flight risk after his Sophomore year. Especially if we get Sheehy.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Considering the role of that type of player, it shouldnt be an issue.

Agree....my point was more that if Sheehy is #3, or #4....or whatever number beyond #2...he's not a fit financially from either side or role.

Regardless from the financial aspect, I don't think they feel he's a fit with Wisconsin. Whether or not I, or anyone else thinks he's a good player or not is irrelevant. He's going to be a good player in college, but if they don't think he's a fit for what they are trying to do, I can respect their decision to recruit to what they feel best helps them win.

Thanks, just don't understand the way it works with scholarship money and all that.

Hughes....was in for his visit a month ago. I would think Eaves wants that answer sooner than later so he can react accordingly. At that point UMD and the sue were interested in him. Has anyone else showed up at the dance for him?

Rockwood....Any idea who else is interested in him? I sure hope he doesn't leave Madison without committing to UW.

This suspense is killing me.

UMD and North Dakota being interested in Hughes was the information I received over the summer. There has been a lot that has changed since then. I was told a few weeks ago he was going to visit some more Big Ten schools before making a final decision.

I don't know who's interested in Rockwood.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

If they have any where from 4 to 6 forwards leaving why are you saying they don't have much money? Obviously they don't know if players will be leaving early but those that are leaving have to account for more than 2 full rides don't you think? Also, is it a certainty that Wagner comes in this year? Initially he was listed as a 2015. Although he is playing with the NTDP this year it's only his first year of Jr hockey. Point wise he doesn't appear to be putting up big numbers and more importantly is he ready to start a college career? If he's not why not defer him another year an use that money for someone who is ready?

It's not just those 4 spots (I don't think you can do much about the other 2....LaBate and Kerdilies....that may leave early as you can't offer money you don't know for sure is available) in a vacuum. You've already signed letters of intent with 6 kids this past fall. I really don't think they have much more then 2 full rides and then change out of the sofa cushions after that....at best. Deferring Wagner both jeopardizes his ever coming (some people get ****ed when you tell them they aren't good enough...no matter how nicely) and only adds one more to the need list which is already pretty long.

Here's a summary of outgoing and incoming I posted a little while back (and Chuck's response...and I'm pretty sure his educated guess are way more educated then mine):

Here's what we have already committed for next fall from the early signing period:
D-Linhart (Wisc)
D-Dougherty (Minn)
D-Ford (Wisc)
G-Grunwald (NY)
F-Ustaski (IL)
F-Wagner (IL)

Of that grouping, I would imagine Dougherty and maybe Wagner got a decent chunk of scholarship monies (maybe 75%?), Ford and Linhart something (50%?), and probably less for Ustaski and Grunwald.

Outgoing (before any early departures may occur):
D-Faust (Minn)
D-Simonelli (IL)
F-Barnes (Minn)
F-Dahl (Wisc)
F-Little (Wisc)
F-Mersch (IL)
F-Meuer (Wisc)
F-Zengerle (NY)

I would imagine Mersch/Simonelli combo were similar cost to Wagner/Dougherty (give or take a little). Barnes/Faust similar to Ford/Linhart. That only leave Zengerle as significant scholarship dollars available as the rest of the outgoing I'm guessing weren't getting a bunch.

Chuck's response was: "I think it's more like Dougherty, Linhart, Ford and Wagner on fulls. Grunwald committed to a full I'm sure as a goalie, I'm not sure if that has changed along the way. Ustaski is probably a half."

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

To add on to what Mark said, even if we have a good guess at incoming/outgoing $, we don't know what money has been pushed around for various years. There are ways to get creative with scholarships.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

I keep seeing this thread pop back up towards the top of the board, and I think "Oh, cool, maybe we've signed someone to help fill in some of the gaping holes in the roster for next year."

I'm sure only my wife faces such consistent disappointment.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

I was poking around the BCHL and AJHL websites and here's a few observations....

Other than Rockwood, all the top BCHL guys are committed for next year. Most were to lower end programs (the Mankoto's and Bemiji's of the world), only 1 other guy was committed to a b6 team (MI).

The AJHL has slimmer pickings as quote a few of their top guys have played MJ hockey. McTavish is still available, as Chuck pointed out in Dec. He's got 57 pts in 43 games. The top goalie was committed to DU, that was the only notable thing I saw.

It was interesting that the big boys of the college hockey world don't seem to be much involved in either league.

Every team in the B6 has a BCHL/AJHL commitment on the books except Michigan State.
Not mention those committed to BU, BC, Notre Dame, Denver. I'm sure some of this is because the bigger boys don't need to spend much time in BC/Alberta to fill out a team. They can spend more time making shorter trips to USNDPT and USHL games to fill their roster. Current WCHA teams and others need to focus on BC/AJ where it is less likely that players have a predisposed sense of where they want to go and by having a larger presence teams like Michigan Tech and Bemidji State can pick up good players where a similar player in USHL cares more about playing for a recognizable American name like a B6 school, Notre Dame, BC, BU and the top of the NCHC.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Rockwood's supposed to visit today. This is purely based on gut feeling, but I feel he'll be the third forward commit of the 2014 class sometime in the next 48 hours. Again, not based on any info, just a feeling.

3 additional commits in the next 48 hrs? That's a pretty bold gut you have there. I'd settle for Rockwood being the only one.

I thought that he was referring to the fact that we already have two forwards that were signed back in November (Ustaski and Wagner).

woot! get this kid and Hughes and that would go a long way toward stabilizing the line-up for next season.
